UNHCR Refugee Camps in Maban County, South Sudan

South Sudan / Sudanese Refugees / Thousands of Sudanese refugees queue at a food distribution implemented by UNHCR partner agency WFP in Yusuf Batil Refugee Camp, Maban County, Upper Nile State, South Sudan on the 10th of August, 2012. At the time this photograph was taken, more than 100,000 people had fled conflict in Sudan’s Blue Nile State, seeking refuge across the border in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State. The topography of Upper Nile is such that the area is prone to extensive flooding. During the rainy season, large potions of northern South Sudan are inundated with water, leading to high levels of malaria and other diseases. Travel in the region is also exceptionally difficult, with roads becoming impassable for months at a time. / UNHCR / B. Sokol / 10 August 2012
