The decision was motivated by Kremlin spokesman <strong>Dmitry Peskov<\/strong> for &#8220;hostile acts against our historical memory,&#8221; i.e., the <strong>destruction of monuments dedicated to Soviet soldiers<\/strong> after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since February 24, 2022, Kallas has carved out a role for herself as an irreproachable leader at Kyiv&#8217;s side\u2014among the most determined at the table of the 27 EU leaders\u2014and may be in the running to succeed Norwegian <strong>Jens Stoltenberg<\/strong> as the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/11\/baltics-on-the-attack-to-succeed-stoltenberg-as-nato-secretary-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NATO secretary general<\/a>. So did the former prime minister of Belgium (between 1999 and 2008), <strong>Guy<\/strong> <strong>Verhofstadt<\/strong>: &#8220;As someone who has been blacklisted by Russia since 2015, welcome Kaja Kallas; it is an honour to be recognized as a staunch opponent of the Russian terrorist state,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/guyverhofstadt\/status\/1757434851177746857?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commented<\/a> sarcastically the liberal MEP, stressing forcefully, however, that &#8220;<strong>inserting a current EU leader on a wanted list must result in tougher EU sanctions<\/strong> and real steps toward a defence union.&#8221; A message similar to the one <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ALDEParty\/status\/1757388009274577361?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed<\/a> also by the European Alde party\u2014to which Kallas&#8217; Estonian Reform Party belongs-\u2014reiterating how &#8220;liberals will not back down&#8221; in the fight &#8220;for freedom in Europe&#8221;. Referring to the Tallinn leader&#8217;s post, Italia Viva MEP and Vice-President of Renew Europe&#8217;s group in the EU Parliament, <strong>Nicola Danti<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DantiNicola\/status\/1757436432392565183?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0made it clear<\/a> that &#8220;her words are<span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"> the words of all of us&#8221; and that &#8220;<strong>Kallas is a courageous woman, a true pro-European and a reference<\/strong>&#8221; for the liberal group in Brussels.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the first time Russia has placed a head of state or government on its blacklist of internationally wanted persons.
