{"id":337092,"date":"2024-02-15T19:07:25","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T18:07:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/02\/15\/nutriscore-la-maggior-parte-degli-studi-pro-etichetta-a-semaforo-condotti-dai-suoi-sviluppatori\/"},"modified":"2024-02-20T15:25:07","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T14:25:07","slug":"nutriscore-most-pro-traffic-light-label-studies-conducted-by-its-developers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/15\/nutriscore-most-pro-traffic-light-label-studies-conducted-by-its-developers\/","title":{"rendered":"Nutriscore, &#8220;most pro traffic light label studies conducted by its developers&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The <strong>Nutriscore<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2021\/06\/18\/nutriscore-letichetta-della-discordia-che-divide-leuropa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">semaphore label<\/a> of discord dividing the EU, is back in the news.<br \/>\nAccording to one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2213434424000069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">researcher-led study<\/a> Dutch Elsevier, &#8220;most of the research on the <strong>Nutriscore<\/strong> has been conducted by authors working at the<strong> EREN<\/strong> (\u00c9quipe de Recherche en Epidemiologie Nutritional) institute in France&#8221;, from which the labeling system originated, <span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">or who &#8220;are connected to its developers.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">In contrast, most (<strong>61 percent<\/strong>) of the studies conducted independently by the developers of Nutriscore showed unfavorable results for this nutritional rating system ranging from &#8220;A,&#8221; colored green, to &#8220;E,&#8221; colored red, which was invented in France and has already been adopted in some EU countries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Of the <\/span><strong>56 studies on the traffic light labeling system<\/strong> conducted by authors employed by or affiliated with its developers, <strong>52 were<\/strong> in favor of the system. While of the <strong>49 studies<\/strong> <strong>conducted by independent, unaffiliated researchers<\/strong>, 61 percent gave an unfavorable outcome to Nutriscore. The study authors conclude that the &#8220;studies and publications on Nutriscore are subject to publication bias&#8221; and that the scientific evaluation of the traffic light label is &#8220;directly influenced by its professional ties to the developers&#8221; of the label itself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This suggests a bias in the articles accepted for publication,&#8221; said Dr. <strong>Stephan Peters,<\/strong> co-author of the study and head of nutrition, health and sustainability at the Dutch Dairy Association. The study authors, <strong>Stephan Peters and Hans Verhagen<\/strong>, are both former members of the scientific committee of the Dutch front logo on product health &#8220;Het Vinkje.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission was to present a proposal for harmonized labeling by the end of the legislative term, but decided to postpone it until a later date due to opposition from several countries.
