According to the provisions of the national Constitution, President of the Republic\u00a0<strong>Zoran Milanovi\u0107<\/strong>\u00a0will decide the date on which to summon voters to the polls &#8211; initially scheduled for September 22 &#8211; but still\u00a0<strong>between 30 and 60 days after the dissolution of Parliament: therefore, May 21, at the latest<\/strong>, just over two weeks before the European elections. Outgoing Prime Minister Plenkovi\u0107 &#8211; President of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) &#8211; has also anticipated that he will again lead his conservative center-right party in the constituency that includes the center of the capital Zagreb.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/19\/croatia-dissatisfaction-with-plenkovic-government-grows-in-eu-and-national-election-superyear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over two weeks of protests in major cities across the country<\/a>\u00a0came the decision\u00a0to bring forward legislative elections (in the year when Croatia will also vote for a new president of the Republic in December). In addition to mounting pressure from <strong>individual professional groups over dissatisfaction with the policies of the Zagreb executive<\/strong> &#8211; from teachers to judges and doctors over salaries to journalists against changes to the Criminal Code to make it a crime to publish leaks &#8211; <strong>it was the center and left-wing parties that catalyzed the desire to &#8220;defend democracy&#8221;<\/strong>. In particular, the protests focused on the appointment of <strong>Ivan Turudi\u0107<\/strong> as prosecutor general with the green light from Croatian deputies, due to his proximity to HDZ and Plenkovi\u0107&#8217;s possible protection from corruption cases should he lose his immunity after the next election round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP), the environmentalist left-wing Mo\u017eemo, and nine other liberal and left-wing opposition parties<\/strong> submitted a formal request for the dissolution of the Croatian Parliament and an immediate return to the polls to facilitate the emergence of a non-HZD-led government for the first time after 13 years\u00a0(Plenkovi\u0107 has been prime minister for 8). At the same time,\u00a0<strong>they excluded from the united\u00a0front right-wing parties such as the Eurosceptic conservatives of Most and the nationalists of the Patriotic Movement<\/strong> since their criticism of the outgoing government was\u00a0about not being tough enough on migration policies, for example.
