{"id":345149,"date":"2024-03-14T10:39:04","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T09:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/03\/14\/ue-5-miliardi-ucraina-aiuti-militari\/"},"modified":"2024-03-19T17:18:56","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T16:18:56","slug":"eu-reaches-agreement-for-another-5-billion-in-military-aid-to-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/14\/eu-reaches-agreement-for-another-5-billion-in-military-aid-to-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"EU reaches agreement for another 5 billion in military aid to Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels-EU member states <strong>approved\u00a0the Ukraine Assistance Facility (UAF). <\/strong>The permanent representatives of the 27 Member States meeting in Brussels agreed on\u00a0<strong>5 billion euros in urgent military aid<\/strong> to Kyiv for 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Assistance Fund for Ukraine is part of the European Peace Fund, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/it\/policies\/european-peace-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instrument<\/a> through which <strong>EU countries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2023\/12\/14\/eu-arms-ukraine-supply-of-ammunition-missiles-and-anti-aircraft-systems-will-continue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have provided<\/a> Ukraine with military equipment&#8211;and obtained repayments, at least partial ones &#8212; to the tune of 5.6 billion euros\u00a0since the beginning of the Russian invasion<\/strong>. The UAF\u00a0also envisions the possibility of covering the costs of purchasing weapons on the international market to deliver them to the Ukrainian military.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We made it: Coreper agreed on the Ukraine Assistance Fund.\u00a0The message is clear: we will support Ukraine with whatever it takes to prevail,&#8221; the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, <strong>Josep Borrell<\/strong>, said in\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JosepBorrellF\/status\/1767957602380509670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> on X. &#8220;The <span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">EU remains determined to provide sustained support to Ukraine and to <strong>ensure that the country receives the military equipment it needs to defend itself,<\/strong>&#8221; the Belgian presidency of the EU Council, which led the negotiations among representatives of the 27, added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This 5 billion is\u00a0in addition to the 5.6 billion already mobilized over two years for the supply of\u00a0<strong>lethal and non-lethal<\/strong> military equipment, such as personal protective equipment, first aid kits, fuel, ammunition, and missiles. The EPF (European Peace Facility), established in March 2021, is an off-budget instrument aimed at consolidating the Union&#8217;s capacity to &#8220;prevent conflict, build peace, and strengthen international security.&#8221; It initially had a financial ceiling of 5.7 billion euros in current prices for 2021-2027. However,\u00a0member countries found it necessary to increase it several times and bring it to the <strong>current ceiling of 12 billion euros until 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The approval\u00a0at the EU level comes after Washington announced that it had unblocked $300 million in arms shipments to Kyiv.
