{"id":346589,"date":"2024-03-19T15:20:29","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T14:20:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/03\/19\/ue-stretta-import-cereali-russia\/"},"modified":"2024-03-25T12:15:02","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T11:15:02","slug":"eu-crackdown-on-russian-grain-imports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/19\/eu-crackdown-on-russian-grain-imports\/","title":{"rendered":"EU planning crackdown on Russian grain imports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The EU is putting Russian and Belarusian agricultural products in its crosshair:\u00a0the <em>Financial Times<\/em> reports that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/438dce75-98d4-4850-ba13-878de1614e03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the coming days<\/a>, the European Commission could impose a <strong>duty of 95 euros per ton on grain imports<\/strong> from Moscow and Minsk, which would raise prices by at least 50 percent, thereby\u00a0decimating demand from member countries.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission immediately responded to the rumors: &#8220;We are not in a position to announce a date for a possible proposal yet,&#8221; clarified <strong>Eric Mamer<\/strong>, chief spokesman for the EU executive, at the daily press briefing in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>However, the first restriction on Russian food products two years after the invasion of Ukraine is imminent. So much for the balance of global food markets, which could be shaken by a decision of this magnitude: not just grains, Brussels is reportedly planning to <strong>impose 50 percent tariffs on oilseed and derivative products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Brussels interprets this as a defensive move if it is true that &#8211; as\u00a0EU Agriculture Commissioner <strong>Janusz Wojciechowski recently stated\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;<strong>Russia uses food as a weapon<\/strong>.&#8221; Indeed, EU imports from Russia of products affected by the possible restrictions reached an all-time high of 4 million tons in 2023. Cheap imports pushed by Moscow to undermine the stability of domestic agricultural markets. Donald Tusk&#8217;s Poland seems poised to follow suit. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/statement_24_1511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">call<\/a> between the Polish premier and Ursula von der Leyen on March 15, <strong>the EU leader reassured Tusk, saying that &#8220;the European Commission is considering the possibility of introducing restrictions<\/strong> on the import of agricultural products&#8221; from Russia. &#8220;The Commission will present a proposal soon,&#8221; von der Leyen promised.<\/p>\n<div>According to the <em>FT<\/em>, the EU Trade Commissioner <strong>Valdis Dombrovskis<\/strong> would\u00a0choose\u00a0tariffs on products over sanctions mainly for two reasons: he could bypass the unanimous approval of the 27 governments, and the measure would allow products to transit the EU along the route to Africa,\u00a0avoiding possible food security consequences for developing countries.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Financial Times, the European Commission is expected to impose a duty of 95 euros per tonne on Russian and Belarusian grains in the coming days.
