{"id":347202,"date":"2024-03-21T11:16:46","date_gmt":"2024-03-21T10:16:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/03\/21\/schlein-schmit-meloni-migranti-economia\/"},"modified":"2024-03-26T16:38:46","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T15:38:46","slug":"schlein-in-brussels-we-are-here-to-win-attacks-meloni-on-migrants-and-the-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/21\/schlein-in-brussels-we-are-here-to-win-attacks-meloni-on-migrants-and-the-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Schlein in Brussels: &#8220;We are here to win.&#8221; Attacks Meloni on migrants and the economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; An obvious statement, but that casts doubts\u00a0on whether <strong>Elly Schlein<\/strong> actually believes it: &#8220;We are here to win the next European elections with our candidate, in the <strong>hope that Nicolas Schmit will become the next president of the European Commission<\/strong>,&#8221; the Dem secretary said at a press point in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>A scenario that, for now, seems like an optical illusion: early <a href=\"https:\/\/it.euronews.com\/2024\/03\/19\/ue-sondaggio-ipsos-per-euronews-avanti-i-partiti-di-estrema-destra-e-ultraconservatori\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surveys<\/a> ahead of the June elections show a stable European People&#8217;s Party in the first place, with <strong>over twenty seats more than the Social Democrats<\/strong>. On the green transition, Schlein speaks of &#8220;<strong>putting resources to accompany farmers fatigued by the crisis in the sector<\/strong>, taking small and medium-sized enterprises, workers frightened by these changes by the hand.&#8221; Then she deals the blow: &#8220;It is not by denying them as the right and the Populars are doing that we solve the problems of those businesses and those farmers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">And then the migration issue, starting with the very current 7.4 billion euro\u00a0Memorandum that von der Leyen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/18\/7-4-billion-deal-with-egypt-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a>, accompanied by Giorgia Meloni, with Al-Sisi&#8217;s Egypt. Another example of &#8220;agreements with governments that do not respect human rights for the <strong>security obsession\u00a0of stopping departures<\/strong>,&#8221; as the PD\u00a0leader called it, all the farther from the &#8220;values of European solidarity&#8221; on which the Union is founded. In the apparent incoherence between the PD&#8217;s announced opposition to the text and the endorsement of its strongman in Brussels, EU Economy Commissioner <strong>Paolo Gentiloni<\/strong>, the key is once again &#8220;a Meloni government that is completely absent from negotiations,&#8221; which has passively &#8220;taken note of choices made by other EU governments that we consider harmful to our country.&#8221; The opposition leader stressed that the PD &#8220;has always defended the Commission&#8217;s proposal brought forward by Gentiloni,&#8221; which ensures &#8220;the right flexibility&#8221; according to the peculiarities of countries. But<strong>\u00a0&#8220;strict quantitative parameters on deficit and debt&#8221;<\/strong> have re-surfaced\u00a0<strong>in negotiations among member states,<\/strong>\u00a0essentially taking the stability pact &#8220;back to the pre-Covid period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The latest arrow in Schlein&#8217;s bow is almost an own goal: the leader pushes the ESP\u00a0and its <em>spitzenkandidat<\/em>, the current EU Labor Commissioner Nicolas Schmit, and claims <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/20\/stop-unpaid-traineeships-commission-unveils-proposed-directive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the proposal<\/a> of the directive &#8220;to say no to free traineeships,&#8221; a battle the Social Democrats have long insisted on in the European Parliament. But in reality, <strong>the proposal presented by Schmit is far from what the European Parliament is asking for and does not provide for compulsory wages.<\/strong>\u00a0It merely promotes &#8220;quality&#8221; traineeships and recommends &#8220;fair remuneration for trainees.&#8221; Leaving a lot of room\u00a0for member states and explaining that otherwise, some companies might use contracts for traineeships (lower anyway) over those for employment regulated by national laws or union bargaining.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PD leader at the European Parliament for a meeting with the young people of the European Socialist Party.
