EU also rejoices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels \u2013\u00a0After months of cross vetoes\u2014mainly between the big three, the United States, Russia and China\u2014the UN Security Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/securitycouncil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has approved<\/a> for the first time a <strong>resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza<\/strong>. Washington abstained, while the other 14 members voted in favour. A call that goes beyond the one for an &#8220;immediate humanitarian pause leading to a sustainable ceasefire&#8221; that came out of the March 21-22 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/22\/eu-leaders-call-for-immediate-humanitarian-pause-in-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Council<\/a>. EU leaders, however, rejoice and now call for &#8220;urgent implementation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The resolution calls for a ceasefire for Ramadan, which began as early as March 10 and will<strong> end between April 9 and 10<\/strong>. At the same time, it provides for the <strong>immediate release of all hostages<\/strong> still in the hands of Hamas and calls on Israel to do more to facilitate the massive entry of humanitarian aid into the Strip.\u00a0&#8220;The implementation of this resolution is vital for the protection of all civilians,&#8221; European Commission President <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> commented on X. She was echoed by the bloc&#8217;s other foreign policy tenors, <strong>Charles Michel and Josep Borrell<\/strong>, who said that the resolution &#8220;needs<span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">\u00a0urgent implementation by all.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the most authoritative international body, the only one that can make decisions binding on paper on all UN member countries, there are currently three EU countries: <strong>France<\/strong>, which is a permanent member; <strong>Slovenia;\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Malta<\/strong>. All three supported the resolution jointly proposed by the ten rotating members. Immediately after the text&#8217;s approval, France\u00a0announced that it was <strong>working on a new resolution to arrive at a permanent ceasefire<\/strong> in Gaza after Ramadan.<\/p>\n<p>Decisive was the US abstention, which sent the cabinet of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu into a rage.<br \/>\nA <strong>decision that &#8220;damages Israel&#8217;s war effort,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0commented Tel Aviv,\u00a0that immediately cancelled the visit of an Israeli delegation\u00a0to Washington scheduled for the next few days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A resolution calling for an end to hostilities for Ramadan and the release of Israeli hostages in the hands of Hamas passes for the first time.
