Brussels – After being sworn in at the National Palace in Ajuda, Lu\u00eds<\/strong> Montenegro\u00a0<\/strong><\/b>is officially the new prime minister of Portugal<\/strong>. The\u00a0March 10 election results<\/a> gave Montenegro and his center-right Alliance-Democratic coalition a relative majority of seats in Parliament. Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, President\u00a0of the European Commission, who\u00a0met Montenegro in previous days<\/a> congratulated him on social media for managing to form a government, excluding the far right.<\/p>\n

Majority parties have only 80 of the 230 seats<\/strong> in the Assembly of the Republic. The abstention of the outgoing Premier Ant\u00f3nio Costa’s <\/strong>Socialist Party\u00a0<\/strong>was crucial for Montenegro because, without it, he\u00a0would not have won the confidence vote of the Chamber. The prime minister’s task will not be easy, as his government depends on the\u00a0votes of outside political formations.<\/p>\n

Another difficulty for Lu\u00eds Montenegro is the lack of experience of the executive members. Only one\u00a0of the 17 ministers has previously held government positions<\/strong>. The Premier claims this is a breath of fresh air within Portuguese politics.
