So much so that half of the College of Commissioners are allegedly\u00a0particularly angered by President\u00a0von der Leyen&#8217;s behavior and her cabinet&#8217;s lack of transparency. In addition to the four commissioners who signed the two letters,<strong> <em>The Morning Post<\/em> reports that\u00a0seven other members of the EU executive\u00a0are dissatisfied<\/strong> with what has gone on since\u00a0January 31 to the present: <strong>Margrethe Vestager (<\/strong>Executive Vice-President and Commissioner for Competition), <strong>V\u011bra Jourov\u00e1<\/strong> (Vice-President for Values and Transparency), <strong>Didier Reynders<\/strong> (responsible for Justice), <strong>Elisa Ferreira<\/strong> (for Cohesion and Reforms), <strong>Kadri Simson<\/strong>(for Energy), <strong>Janez Lenar\u010di\u010d<\/strong> (for Crisis Management), and <strong>Helena Dalli<\/strong> (for Equality). If confirmed by a majority of the political groups in the European Parliament, a <strong>vote at the mini-plenary session on &#8216;Piepergate&#8217;<\/strong> is scheduled for Thursday (April 11) on the initiative of the Greens\/Ale Group to call for the revocation of the MEP&#8217;s appointment from the CDU.<\/p>\n<h3 id='the-pipergate-case'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">The &#8216;Pipergate&#8217; case.<\/h3>\n<p>It all started on\u00a0January 31, when the European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/mex_24_583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the appointment of Pieper as EU envoy for SMEs &#8211; to keep a &#8220;close relationship&#8221; with national business representatives &#8211; taking office at a &#8220;subsequent&#8221; date and reporting directly to President von der Leyen and Commissioner Breton. According to the Commission, Pieper would have &#8220;extensive experience and expertise in SME policies&#8221; as a member of the European Parliament&#8217;s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) in this legislature (he has been an MEP since 2004) and has\u00a0reportedly demonstrated &#8220;a commendable track record&#8221; in strategic relations &#8220;with a diverse range of stakeholders, demonstrating strong leadership, advocacy, and negotiating skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144194\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 450px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Schermata-2021-03-10-alle-15.37.33.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-144194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Schermata-2021-03-10-alle-15.37.33-300x200.png\" alt=\"Thierry Breton\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Schermata-2021-03-10-alle-15.37.33-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Schermata-2021-03-10-alle-15.37.33-1024x681.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Schermata-2021-03-10-alle-15.37.33-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Schermata-2021-03-10-alle-15.37.33-1536x1022.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Schermata-2021-03-10-alle-15.37.33-2048x1362.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton<\/p>\n<p>However, the first doubts about the choice of Christian Democrat Pieper were raised on Feb. 29 by 12 MEPs from the Green\/ALE, S&amp;D, Renew Europe, and The Left groups, who, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/P-9-2024-000671_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">written question<\/a>, committed the Commission to <strong>answer about the &#8220;additional qualifications&#8221; that allowed Pieper to outperform other candidates<\/strong> <strong>in the selection process<\/strong>. In particular, MEPs\u00a0revived reports that &#8220;other female candidates from under-represented member states in positions of responsibility scored better in the three-step recruitment process.&#8221; It is why they raised &#8220;<strong>questions about the transparency of the process and the influence of the Commission President<\/strong>.&#8221; It is no coincidence that one of the questions posed to the College of Commissioners is precisely how much &#8220;the party affiliation of the successful candidate played a decisive role in his appointment.&#8221; Czech MEP <strong>Martina Dlabajov\u00e1<\/strong> (Renew Europe), a candidate for the post, has already filed an appeal with the Commission&#8217;s Directorate-General for Human Resources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">While the first signer of the question, German Green <strong>Daniel Freund<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/daniel_freund\/status\/1775466303744094703?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that &#8220;after five weeks&#8221; since the request, &#8220;I have still not received an answer&#8221; from the EU Commission.\u00a0The first letter from the four Commissioners explicitly asked von der Leyen to discuss &#8220;at the earliest possible opportunity&#8221; within the College about &#8220;these allegations and the possible impact on the next steps in the hiring process&#8221; of Pieper.
