In other words, <strong>only MEPs from the European People&#8217;s Party opposed the amendment<\/strong>, siding with von der Leyen&#8217;s choice in favor of her fellow party member from the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). European populars defending European populars.<strong>The group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&amp;D) and the liberal group of Renew Europe instead lined up en bloc<\/strong> against the Commission&#8217;s number one, supported by the Greens\/Ale, The Left, and the far-right Identity and Democracy (to which the League belongs). The Commission was required to respond to the &#8220;additional qualifications&#8221; that allowed Pieper to outperform the other candidates in the selection process and to\u00a0&#8220;<strong>questions about the transparency of the process and the influence of the Commission president<\/strong>.&#8221; It is no coincidence that Czech MEP\u00a0<strong>Martina Dlabajov\u00e1<\/strong> (Renew Europe), a candidate for the post, filed an appeal with the Commission&#8217;s Directorate-General for Human Resources. The European Parliament &#8220;<strong>notes with concern that the successful candidate is an outgoing MEP from the German political party of President von der Leyen<\/strong>,&#8221; reads the amendment approved today in plenary session, which at this point &#8220;calls on the Commission to <strong>remediate the situation by revoking the nomination<\/strong> and initiating a truly transparent and open process for the selection of the EU SME Envoy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Curt was the comment of the chief spokesman of the EU executive, <strong>Eric Mamer<\/strong>, during the daily press briefing: &#8220;We do not react to individual amendments that have been voted&#8221; on the Commission&#8217;s budget discharge. Without sparing a dig at MEPs about the fact that &#8220;<strong>Parliament has the right to vote, but we have our institutional autonomy<\/strong>&#8221; and clearing the field of doubts that the latest political developments may have affected Pieper&#8217;s appointment: &#8220;Yes and yes,&#8221; was the answer to a question regarding the Commission&#8217;s belief that the CDU MEP is the best candidate and whether he will begin the assignment-as stipulated in the contract signed on March 31- <strong>from April 16<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<h3 id='the-pipergate-case-inside-the-eu-commission'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">The &#8216;Pipergate&#8217; case inside the EU Commission<\/h3>\n<p><strong>It all started last January 31<\/strong>, when the European Commission&#8217;s services <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/mex_24_583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the appointment of Pieper as EU envoy for SMEs &#8211; to keep a &#8220;close relationship&#8221; with national business representatives &#8211; taking office &#8220;subsequently&#8221; and reporting directly to President von der Leyen and Commissioner Breton. According to reports from the Commission,\u00a0<strong>Pieper had &#8220;extensive experience and expertise in SME policies&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>as a member of the European Parliament&#8217;s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) in this legislature (he has been an MEP since 2004) and had demonstrated &#8220;<strong>a commendable track record<\/strong>&#8221; in strategic relations &#8220;with a diverse range of stakeholders, demonstrating strong leadership, advocacy, and negotiating skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_351299\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 450px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/P057866-207724-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-351299\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/P057866-207724-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Gentiloni von der Leyen Piepergate\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/P057866-207724-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/P057866-207724-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/P057866-207724-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/P057866-207724-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/P057866-207724-2048x1362.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/P057866-207724-750x499.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/P057866-207724-1140x758.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>From left: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni<\/p>\n<p>After the parliamentary question on &#8216;Piepergate&#8217; remained ignored for a month by President von der Leyen, on March 27, four members of the College &#8211; <strong>Thierry Breton <\/strong>(responsible for Internal Market), <strong>Paolo Gentiloni\u00a0<\/strong>(Economy), <strong>Nicolas Schmit<\/strong> (Labor and Social Rights, as well as <em>Spitzenkandidat<\/em> of the European Socialist Party) <strong>and Josep Borrell<\/strong> (Vice-President of the Commission and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy) &#8211; wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/04\/04\/von-der-leyen-under-scrutiny-as-fellow-party-member-pieper-nominated-as-eu-sme-envoy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter to the president of the Commission<\/a> to explicitly request a discussion &#8220;at the earliest possible opportunity&#8221; within the College on &#8220;these allegations and the possible impact on the next steps in the recruitment process&#8221; of Pieper.In addition to party affiliations (Gentiloni, Schmit, and Borrell are social democrats, while Breton is a liberal), the fact that <strong>President von der Leyen bypassed the recommendation in favor of Dlabajov\u00e1 by Breton<\/strong>, who was responsible for judging the most suitable candidate, brought about the move by the four Commissioners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/04\/05\/seibert-von-der-leyens-chief-of-staff-on-leave-to-lead-her-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">there is also the case for the\u00a0nomination<\/a> of the chief of staff, <strong>Bj\u00f6rn Seibert<\/strong>, and the newly appointed director for &#8216;Communication and Political Services,&#8217; <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">at the Directorate General for Communication (Dg Comm), <strong>Alexander Winterstein<\/strong>, to campaign manager and communications and media relations manager, respectively, for von der Leyen as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/07\/von-der-leyen-spitzenkandidatin-of-the-epp-in-european-elections-we-will-not-allow-extremists-to-destroy-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EPP top candidate<\/a>. Responding to the four commissioners&#8217; letter was their colleague in charge of the budget, <strong>Johannes Hahn <\/strong>&#8211; also from the European People&#8217;s Party family like von der Leyen and Pieper &#8211; who<strong>, on the President&#8217;s proxy, assured that &#8220;the decision is entirely in line with the rules.&#8221;<\/strong> However, the same four commissioners addressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/04\/09\/piepergate-widens-half-the-college-of-commissioners-against-von-der-leyen-over-appointment-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a second letter to von der Leyen<\/a>, pointing the finger at the fact that the appointment did\u00a0not consider\u00a0the rule of collegiality requiring all Commissioners to\u00a0participate in the selection process. For this very reason,\u00a0<strong>half the College is reportedly up in arms against the President<\/strong>, with seven other members dissatisfied: <strong>Margrethe Vestager<\/strong>(Executive Vice-President and Commissioner for Competition), <strong>V\u011bra Jourov\u00e1<\/strong> (Vice-President for Values and Transparency), <strong>Didier Reynders<\/strong> (responsible for Justice), <strong>Elisa Ferreira<\/strong> (for Cohesion and Reforms), <strong>Kadri Simson<\/strong>(for Energy), <strong>Janez Lenar\u010di\u010d<\/strong> (for Crisis Management), and <strong>Helena Dalli<\/strong> (for Equality).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Populars remain alone in defending the President of the EU Commission and her non-transparent choice of the MEP (and fellow CDU party member) Markus Pieper as EU SME envoy.
