However, for the leader of Fratelli d&#8217;Italia, it is now an established strategy. <strong>Giorgia Meloni<\/strong> <strong>announced yesterday (April 28)\u00a0<\/strong>at the party&#8217;s conference in Pescara <strong>that she will be the leading candidate in all five Italian constituencies in the June European elections.<\/strong>\u00a0However, as has been the case since 2014, she will not go to\u00a0Brussels after the vote. Meloni &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/04\/22\/italys-first-official-european-candidates-are-emerging-with-some-party-leaders-on-the-front-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as well as other leaders<\/a> &#8211; is running solely to attract preferences to her party. In 2014, the far-right party\u00a0failed to pass the threshold, making\u00a0Meloni&#8217;s candidacy useless, while in 2019, she was elected in all constituencies and left the seat to <strong>Pietro Fiocchi<\/strong> (Northwest),\u00a0<strong>Sergio Berlato<\/strong> (Northeast), <strong>Nicola Procaccini<\/strong> (Center), <strong>Raffaele Fitto<\/strong> (South), and <strong>Raffaele Stancanelli<\/strong> (Islands). The real difference from the other two votes is the fact that\u00a0<strong>Meloni today is not only the leader of Fratelli d&#8217;Italia but also President of the Council of Ministers,<\/strong> and, in this month of campaigning, she will be able to use this institutional clout to push her party to the polls, aiming to elect as many members of the 76-member Italian MEP delegation as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Already during her press conference at the beginning of the year, the leader of FdI and the President\u00a0of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party (ECR) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/04\/european-elections-talks-with-brussels-on-mes-and-stability-pact-giorgia-melonis-2024-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had anticipated<\/a> her interest in what she called a &#8220;high-level democratic test,&#8221; that is, comparing herself with the other leaders of Italian parties at the ballot box: &#8220;<strong>I think that measuring herself against the consensus of citizens would be useful and interesting,&#8221;<\/strong> Meloni had said to unofficially launch her\u00a0run at the new election,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GiorgiaMeloni\/status\/1784526379666616352?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1784526379666616352%7Ctwgr%5Edc9572ce082cd7f0f980b5e826b4ecd9660bc3cc%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ilpost.it%2F2024%2F04%2F28%2Fgiorgia-meloni-candidata-elezioni-europee%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which became official<\/a> arrived yesterday. There is an old Italian habit of considering\u00a0<strong>the European Union as a ground for political confrontation\u00a0of an almost exclusively national nature<\/strong> and, more specifically, the European Parliament as &#8220;a gymnasium or a nursing home,&#8221; as <em>Eunews<\/em> wrote when there was an exodus of MEPs from Brussels to Rome after the September 2022 legislative elections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Awaiting the publication of candidates for all parties in the five constituencies expected on Wednesday (May 1), when the deadline for submission of electoral lists will expire, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/04\/22\/elezioni-europee-liste-candidati-italia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has already been made known<\/a> the candidacy of the Democratic Party secretary,<strong> Elly Schlein<\/strong>, as the leading candidate in the Central and Islands constituencies, of the deputy prime minister and secretary of Forza Italia,\u00a0<strong>Antonio Tajani<\/strong>, in all constituencies except the Islands, of the leader of +Europa,\u00a0<strong>Emma Bonino<\/strong>, in the Northwest constituency for the <strong>United States of Europe<\/strong> coalition (which brings together +Europa and Italia Viva and will merge into the liberal group Renew Europe), and of the secretary of Azione, <strong>Carlo Calenda<\/strong>, in all constituencies as announced in a surprise yesterday. Should they be elected, none of these Italian politicians would be able to take office as MEPs unless they first renounce their current\u00a0institutional office.
