An &#8220;attack on the foundations of our democracy.&#8221; That is how the Social Democrats in Germany called <strong>the attack Friday evening (May 3) of\u00a0the outgoing MEP and leading SPD candidate in the German state of Saxony,<\/strong> <strong>Matthias Ecke,<\/strong> as he was putting up election posters in Dresden. &#8220;This is an unequivocal warning sign for all citizens of this country,&#8221; after the beating, according to the\u00a0SPD.\u00a0 Police explained to the press that <strong>the 41-year-old politician was assaulted and kicked by four men<\/strong>, the same men who shortly before allegedly beat up on the same street a Green Party volunteer who was also putting up election posters for his party.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\u00a0&#8220;<strong>The violent behavior and intimidation of\u00a0democrats is a tool of the fascists.\u00a0We must call a spade a spade<\/strong>,&#8221; the SPD said,\u00a0recalling how &#8212; with the election campaign having barely begun a week ago &#8212; &#8220;we are already observing and experiencing levels of attacks that are\u00a0not even\u00a0remotely acceptable under any circumstances.&#8221; The reference is to a figure provided by the Saxony Ministry of the Interior, according to which,\u00a0<strong>in the first week of campaigning for the June European elections, 51 politically motivated crimes<\/strong> were reported to the police, while since the beginning of the year, a total of 112 crimes&#8211;of which 30 were against officials or elected officials&#8211;have been reported in connection with local and European elections in the federal state of Germany.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Spd.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-157244 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Spd-300x169.jpg\" width=\"451\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Spd-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Spd-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Spd.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Dismayed by the vicious attack on MEP Ecke in Dresden,&#8221; the European Parliament President <strong>Roberta Metsola\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EP_President\/status\/1786736272339259753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said on X<\/a> in German, strongly urging &#8220;to bring to justice those responsible.&#8221;\u00a0European Commission President and <em>Spitzenkandidatin<\/em> of the European People&#8217;s Party (EPP), <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vonderleyen_epp\/status\/1786814277837287884\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned<\/a>\u00a0the attack, adding that she was &#8220;deeply affected&#8221;
