And they forced the president of the EU-state-funded study and research institution, Patrizia Nanz, to take a stand: &#8220;<strong>I intend to guarantee a space where faculty and researchers can ask all questions<\/strong>,&#8221; the German political scientist assured in defense of the protesters.<\/p>\n<p>From Berlin to Rome, Paris to Barcelona, via Cambridge and Helsinki, numerous student groups are protesting against Israel&#8217;s military intervention in the Gaza Strip and the alleged complicity of EU countries.\u00a0<strong>In Brussels, tensions remain high<\/strong> both at the Universit\u00e9 libre de Bruxelles (ULB), with some students assaulting the leader of the Jewish students&#8217; union during a protest action, and at the Flemish University (VUB), where a university building has been occupied for days.<\/p>\n<p>VUB\u00a0decided to discontinue an artificial intelligence research project with two Israeli organizations. Then Ghent University wants to <strong>close cooperation with three Israeli partner organizations of the university<\/strong>, involved in the production of military equipment or directly linked to the Tel Aviv government, its rector <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belganewsagency.eu\/ugent-rector-wants-to-end-cooperation-with-three-israeli-organisations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Florence &#8211; and several Italian cities &#8211; the student intifada has begun, with students from Italian and international universities camped out in Piazza San Marco to demand a halt to the genocide in Gaza. Students urgently demand in the Manifesto, also relaunched by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euiresunion.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Union of Researchers<\/a> of the EUI, that every university publicly stand up for the ceasefire and against Israel&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/15\/borrell-warns-israel-military-operation-in-rafah-strains-relations-with-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0invasion<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Rafah. Most importantly, the EUI pledged to <strong>ensure that the Institute &#8220;remains a safe space for all, particularly its students and researchers, to freely express their views<\/strong> and engage in peaceful protests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eui.eu\/news-hub?id=statement-by-eui-president-patrizia-nanz-on-student-and-researcher-protests#msdynttrid=m3MISXyeDxvYCk9oFhqOr5WjfVNn2_W75EtlMCQ_x44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went on a limb<\/a>: &#8220;As President of the European University Institute, I intend to guarantee a space where faculty and researchers can pose all questions \u2013 even those that challenge what we take for granted \u2013 as long as it is done with intellectual rigor and respect for the dignity of those involved.&#8221;\u00a0Spurring those in the political and academic worlds who immediately opposed the protests to &#8220;distinguish between the various calls and slogans coming out of these protests \u2013 some of which we may not align with \u2013 and their <strong>profound roots in the defence of peace, the rule of law, and human life<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of violent protests at American universities, students across Europe denounce the complicity of institutions at various levels with Israel.
