An article that for the first time demonstrated the Kremlin&#8217;s expansionist aims to overcome &#8220;<strong>the tragedy of 1991, that terrible catastrophe in our history<\/strong>&#8221; and that today, more than two years later, finds another confirmation in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/regulation.gov.ru\/Regulation\/Npa\/PublicView?npaID=147832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">draft<\/a> of an official document from the Russian Defense Ministry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_336396\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 449px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/000_34HC7NP-scaled-e1707923538158.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-336396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/000_34HC7NP-scaled-e1707923538158-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"Vladimir Putin Russia\" width=\"449\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-336396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin (credits: Natalia Kolesnikova \/ Afp)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The new proposal is to <strong>review Russia&#8217;s maritime border in the eastern Baltic Sea<\/strong> since, according to the Defense Ministry, the 1985 Soviet surveying of the border used nautical charts from the mid-20th century and, therefore, <strong>did not fully correspond to &#8220;more modern&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0map coordinates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The proposed changes, which lack indications of how they would impact borders, <strong>were supposed to take effect in January 2025<\/strong> and\u00a0aimed at ship crews, law enforcement, and defense and security officials operating in Finland&#8217;s eastern Gulf. However,\u00a0<strong>the draft was deleted yesterday<\/strong> (May 22) from the ministry&#8217;s website without further explanation after a wave of criticism and irritation from <strong>neighbors in the region, all NATO members<\/strong> ( Finland from 2023 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/07\/sweden-officially-32nd-nato-member-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweden<\/a> from March 2024).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\u00a0Alarm bells went off throughout the Baltic region, with\u00a0<strong>the Foreign Ministers of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden in contact <\/strong>to clarify the situation. &#8220;Russia&#8217;s actions are a deliberate and targeted provocation to intimidate neighboring countries and their societies,&#8221;\u00a0the Lithuanian foreign ministry\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/russia-defense-ministry-change-baltic-sea-border-finland-latvia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Politico.<\/em>\u00a0 &#8220;This is further proof that <strong>Russia&#8217;s aggressive and revisionist policy is a threat to the security<\/strong> of neighboring countries and Europe as a whole.&#8221; The Finnish Premier, <strong>Petteri Orp<\/strong>, clarified that &#8220;there has been no contact&#8221; with Moscow regarding\u00a0the issue.
