Just last week, under pressure from Rassemblement National, the ID Presidency\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/23\/eu-parliaments-identity-and-democracy-group-expels-afd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expelled Germany&#8217;s Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland (AfD)<\/a> group because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/21\/far-right-alliance-in-european-parliament-breaks-up-on-nazism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statements<\/a> of its leading candidate, <strong>Maximilian Krah<\/strong>, on the failure to condemn the past Nazi special forces SS. Having dumped the inconvenient German ally and with a major electoral affirmation of her party on the horizon (which could become the largest delegation to the EU Parliament in the next legislature), Le Pen is now aiming to forge a solid post-electoral alliance with one of the hegemonic figures of the European right, aiming to\u00a0<strong>make a field that so far has been highly fragmented field count as much as possible due to a change in the balance of power in the European Parliament<\/strong>\u00a0increasingly to the right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\u00a0&#8220;<strong>I think an opportunity like this should not be missed<\/strong>,&#8221; Le Pen warned, sending a message to Meloni on the fact that &#8220;she and I agree on the essential issues, among which is taking back control of our respective countries.&#8221; According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/europe-poll-of-polls\/european-parliament-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest projections<\/a> of the composition of the next EU Parliament, <strong>ECR could win 71 seats and ID\u00a068<\/strong>, in addition to AfD aiming for 17 and the Hungarians of Fidesz (currently unaffiliated, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/02\/orban-puts-entry-into-post-european-ecr-in-crosshairs-but-group-in-eu-parliament-awaits-application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">there has been close contact<\/a> between Meloni and <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong> for a possible entry into the European family of conservatives) who will try hard to maintain the current 12 share. Not the least of these is the crucial question of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/23\/alliance-with-far-right-inflames-pre-european-debate-von-der-leyen-opens-up-to-meloni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explicit opening<\/a> coming from the current European Commission President and <em>Spitzenkandidatin<\/em> (joint candidate) of the European People&#8217;s Party (EPP), <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, to Meloni for possible cooperation in the next legislature. Like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/31\/salvini-a-problem-for-melonis-post-european-election-moves-i-would-not-vote-for-von-der-leyen-disastrous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allies in the League, <\/a>in the ID Group, Le Pen also rejects the scenario of a second von der Leyen term: &#8220;<strong>The President of the Commission knows that her time is up, and she is trying to buy votes. However, as far as we are concerned, we will never, I repeat never, vote for von der Leyen<\/strong>, who has conducted a disastrous policy for the peoples of Europe,&#8221; she responded to an explicit question about\u00a0possible support of the right-wing maxi-group for a new term at the Commission, defining the one coming to a close as &#8220;toxic.&#8221; On the other hand, President von der Leyen\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/multimedia.europarl.europa.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurovision Debate 2024<\/a>\u00a0categorically rejected the idea of opening up to Rassemblement National or AfD and made clear\u00a0that cooperation would be with individual MEPs and &#8220;not with ECR.&#8221;
