{"id":365989,"date":"2024-05-31T13:24:40","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T11:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/05\/31\/sakharov-premio-voto-elezioni-europee\/"},"modified":"2024-06-05T13:08:43","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T11:08:43","slug":"sakharov-prize-laureates-urge-citizens-to-vote-in-upcoming-european-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/31\/sakharov-prize-laureates-urge-citizens-to-vote-in-upcoming-european-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Sakharov Prize laureates urge citizens to vote in upcoming European elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; <strong>Recent Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought laureates<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20240529IPR21711\/sakharov-prize-laureates-call-on-europeans-to-vote-and-defend-democracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">call on citizens <\/a>to go to the polls to vote and choose the future of the European Union in the upcoming European elections on June 6-9.\u00a0It is a powerful message coming from people who have fought for freedom and democracy in their country, where it is not a given, unlike in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>In a video message recorded for the <em>Use Your Vote<\/em> campaign of the EU Parliament,\u00a0<strong>Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya<\/strong>, Belarusian opposition leader in exile, <strong>Lorent Saleh<\/strong>, Venezuelan activist in exile, <strong>Oleksandra Matviichuk<\/strong>, Ukrainian lawyer, and <strong>Leonid Volkov<\/strong>, former Chief of Staff of <strong>Alexei Navalny<\/strong>, are some of the Sakharov Prize holders who called Europeans to the polls. &#8220;Dear fellow citizens of Europe, in Europe, you have a precious gift: the power to elect your leaders and shape your future,&#8221; Tsikhanouskaya said. A strong signal, coming from someone\u00a0who protested in the streets with the Belarusian people to demand for democracy, so they know how important it is to participate in <strong>free and open<\/strong> elections.<\/p>\n<p>The democratic system, which is the basis of our freedoms, should not be a foregone conclusion and taken for granted, Saleh argues. <strong>&#8220;Democracy is a system that is difficult to build, yet also very easy to lose<\/strong>.&#8221; It is, therefore, a citizen&#8217;s duty to fight to maintain the democratic system. A\u00a0fight that does not, however, involve the use of force but of a pencil to express a preference.<\/p>\n<p>Navalny, a leading opponent of <strong>Vladimir Putin,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/16\/russian-opponent-alexei-navalny-died-in-prison-eu-condemns-kremlin-solely-responsible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died on February 16 in a gulag<\/a> where he was locked up, but his vision of the world and a free Russia is not over. Taking the baton\u00a0is Volkov, Navalny&#8217;s friend and fellow soldier, who wished to recall, &#8220;T<strong>o vote is an enormous privilege.\u00a0A\u00a0privilege worth fighting for and making sacrifices.
