{"id":367148,"date":"2024-06-05T13:01:29","date_gmt":"2024-06-05T11:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/06\/05\/grecia-albania-beleri-candidato-europee\/"},"modified":"2024-07-24T09:00:32","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T07:00:32","slug":"greece-may-also-open-complicated-parliamentary-immunity-case-after-european-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/05\/greece-may-also-open-complicated-parliamentary-immunity-case-after-european-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Greece may also open complicated parliamentary immunity case after European elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The cases are different, as are the places of detention and the motivations behind the choice of candidacy. <strong>But these 2024 European elections will also go down in history for the decisions of two parties in Italy and Greece to include\u00a0<strong>a person detained in a third country<\/strong> in their respective electoral lists,<\/strong> opening up a potentially unprecedented scenario in Brussels on parliamentary immunity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_367063\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 449px;\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_367063\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-367063\" style=\"width: 449px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/beleris-e1692022727313-1-e1703861425457.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-367063\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/beleris-e1692022727313-1-e1703861425457-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"Fredi Beleri Greece Albania\" width=\"449\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/beleris-e1692022727313-1-e1703861425457-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/beleris-e1692022727313-1-e1703861425457-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/beleris-e1692022727313-1-e1703861425457-750x422.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/beleris-e1692022727313-1-e1703861425457.jpeg 866w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-367063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The mayor-elect of Himar\u00eb (Albania), Fredis Beleri, a candidate in the European elections with New Democracy of the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-367063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to<strong> Ilaria Salis<\/strong>, an Italian citizen detained in Hungary for over\u00a0a year in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/29\/ilaria-salis-in-chains-in-budapest-courtroom-tajani-hungarian-government-must-enforce-her-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unacceptable conditions<\/a> for an EU member country (only since May 15 has she been granted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/15\/ilaria-salis-under-house-arrest-in-budapest-avs-we-want-to-bring-her-back-to-italy-and-brussels-as-an-mep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">house arrest<\/a>) and a leading candidate in the Northwest constituency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/02\/all-italian-candidates-in-the-2024-european-elections-schlein-meloni-tajani-calenda-and-renzi-running\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with the Green-Left Alliance<\/a>, the Greek Prime Minister <strong>Kyriakos Mitsotakis<\/strong> could open a post-election diplomatic case between Brussels and Tirana over his decision to nominate on the lists of the ruling New Democracy party <strong>one of the most controversial political figures for relations between the two neighboring countries<\/strong>: the ethnic Greek mayor of the Albanian municipality of Himar\u00eb, <strong>Fredis Beleri<\/strong>, who was sentenced in March in the first degree\u00a0to two years in prison for buying and selling votes in the May 2023 municipal elections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Beleri&#8217;s case had already emerged as a point of friction even at the European tables during the informal dinner between the heads of the EU institutions and the leaders of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova held\u00a0in Athens at the end of August\u00a0last year. Missing from that meeting was only the Albanian Premier\u00a0<strong>Edi Rama,<\/strong> who was not invited because of tensions between Greece and Albania over the detention of the elected mayor of Himar\u00eb, who <strong>was never able to be sworn in as he had been detained in jail for two days before\u00a0the May 14 elections<\/strong> <strong>on charges of vote buying\u00a0<\/strong>(the challenger and incumbent first citizen, <strong>Jorgo Goro<\/strong>, also went to jail for corruption). Greece argues that the Beleri case should be seen as a European issue and not just a bilateral one &#8212; as it would concern respect for the rule of law and minority rights in a country aspiring to join the Union &#8212; but <strong>the forcing has annoyed some of the 27 Member States\u00a0most supportive of accelerating the enlargement process<\/strong>, such as Germany. Technically, Tirana and Athens are still in a state of war &#8212; since 1940 when Albania was an Italian protectorate during World War II &#8212; and, despite\u00a0the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, Good Neighborliness, and Security that has been in force since 1996, the two NATO members are experiencing escalating tensions on the diplomatic front, which also closely involve the EU institutions and the enlargement process.
