But early indications from the Netherlands on yesterday&#8217;s (June 6) vote in the European elections could be an almost unhoped-for preview for the opposition to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/28\/right-wing-coalition-in-the-netherlands-finds-premier-candidate-former-intelligence-chief-schoof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imminent right-wing government<\/a>\u00a0in the EU member country. According to the Ipsos\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nos.nl\/collectie\/13972\/artikel\/2523437-definitieve-exitpoll-grote-winst-pvv-nek-aan-nek-met-groenlinks-pvda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exit poll<\/a>, the far-right Euroskeptic party PVV (Party for Freedom) of <strong>Geert Wilders <\/strong>and the Labor Party-Green Left GroenLinks (PvdA\/Gl) coalition led by former EU Commission Vice-President <strong>Frans Timmermans\u00a0tied at the top of voter preferences<\/strong> <strong>and would compete\u00a0for the title\u00a0of the top national force<\/strong>. If early unofficial indications are confirmed, the PVV\u00a0will get seven\u00a0(as opposed to one\u00a0in the 2019 European elections), and it will almost certainly become the largest Dutch delegation in the European Parliament. In the meantime,\u00a0<strong>the joint PvdA\/Gl list, which is expected to stand at eight\u00a0MEPs and undermine the PVV as the largest national political force<\/strong>, will see its elected members split into two groups when the European Parliament\u00a0takes office: the PvdA is a member of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&amp;D) group, while GroenLinks belongs to the Greens\/Ale group. <strong>Voter turnout stands just above 46 percent<\/strong>, the best figure since the 1989 European elections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Exit polls in the Netherlands also show a possible retreat of the outgoing premier <strong>Mark Rutte<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>People&#8217;s Party for Freedom and Democracy<\/strong> (VVD) liberals -from five\u00a0to four\u00a0seats &#8211; as well as for the\u00a0<strong>Christian Democratic Appeal\u00a0<\/strong>(CDA) &#8211; from four\u00a0to three &#8211; in line with the outcome of the legislative vote in the fall of 2023.\u00a0 The liberals of <strong>Democraten 66, <\/strong>are expected to see a slight rebound\u00a0&#8211; from two\u00a0to three seats. The feat\u00a0of the <strong>County Civic Movement <\/strong>(populist party advocating farmers&#8217; interests), with two\u00a0seats, and the center-right <b>New Social Contract,\u00a0<\/b>with one, are confirmed: both parties forming the new executive in The Hague with the far-right PVV\u00a0and the liberals of the VVD <strong>could enter the European Parliament for the first time, banking on joining the center-right grouping of the European People&#8217;s Party (EPP)\u00a0<\/strong>but potentially clashing with fellow Christian Democrats. At the close of the election campaign, Wilders opened to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/27\/le-pen-meloni-alliance-eu-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposal<\/a> from the <em>de facto<\/em> leader of France&#8217;s far-right Rassemblement National, <strong>Marine Le Pen<\/strong>, to the Italian Premier and President of the ECR Party,<strong> Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>: &#8220;I have a lot of respect for both Salvini [<em>leader of the League, member of the Id Group, ed<\/em>] and Meloni.\u00a0I<strong>f it were possible to form a larger group, I would be thrilled to join them<\/strong>.&#8221; A mega-group in the EU Parliament with Rassemblement National, Fratelli d&#8217;Italia, Lega, Vox, Law and Justice, and Fidesz (difficult to achieve at the moment) could leave room for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/30\/from-the-far-right-to-the-far-left-the-plate-tectonics-of-possible-new-groups-in-the-eu-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a possible new parliamentary line-up<\/a> even more shifted to the far right.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/18266899\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the polls closed in the first member country to vote in the European elections, early indications would show a head-to-head between Geert Wilders&#8217; Party for Freedom (up, but less than the polls) and the Labor Party-Green Left GroenLinks coalition.
