After the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/eu-voters-push-populars-and-pro-european-majority-von-der-leyen-toward-a-second-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European elections and the new balances <\/a>between the parties that will form the new majority in the EU Parliament, the race has begun not only for <strong>Ursula von der Leyen <\/strong>to be reappointed as head of the Union&#8217;s executive but also for the 26 governments (Germany has reportedly already made its choice with the confirmation of the outgoing president) to <strong>choose their respective European commissioner candidates to be put forward for the future Commission presidency<\/strong> for final nomination and passage from the vote in the EU Parliament. Therefore, it is clear that not only the political composition of the government that nominates its candidate should be considered, but also that of the majority that holds the Commission in the European Parliament. Should it occur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/11\/commission-presidency-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">an acceleration on von der Leyen&#8217;s name<\/a> as early as late June (at the European Council on 27\u201328) and mid-July (with confirmation at the plenary of the EU Parliament between 16 and 19), then an exchange can begin with the Berlaymont at the turn of the summer and confirmation hearings in Parliament between September and October (a couple of months ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/29\/here-is-the-timeline-of-what-will-happen-in-the-weeks-following-the-european-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roadmap<\/a>). In any case, there should be no significant surprises even if von der Leyen-bis fades, given that the <strong>Popular-Social Democrat-Liberal majority (with a possible entry of the Greens)<\/strong> is the only viable option in the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-map\" data-src=\"visualisation\/18038724\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-map\"><span style=\"color: #212121; font-size: 1.563em;\">The perspectives of the current European commissioners<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Of the 27 members of the current College of Commissioners, <strong>there are a few with the prospect of remaining at the Berlaymont for another five years<\/strong>. In addition to von der Leyen running for reappointment to the presidency and Latvian Dombrovskis reappointed from Riga, Slovak <strong>Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d <\/strong>(Vice President for Interinstitutional Relations and the Green Deal) and Hungarian <strong>Oliv\u00e9r V\u00e1rhelyi<\/strong> (Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy) have a very good chance. At the same time, the Czech <strong>V\u011bra Jourov\u00e1<\/strong>(Vice-President for Values and Transparency), the Bulgarian <strong>Iliana Ivanova<\/strong> (Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth) and the Cypriot <strong>Stella Kyriakides<\/strong> (Commissioner for Health and Food Safety) can still play their cards. Such is the case with Denmark&#8217;s <strong>Margrethe Vestager<\/strong> (Vice-President for Digital and Commissioner for Competition), Finland&#8217;s <strong>Jutta Urpilainen<\/strong> (Commissioner for International Partnerships), Luxembourg&#8217;s <strong>Nicolas Schmit<\/strong> (Commissioner for Labor and Social Rights, as well as <em>Spitzenkandidat<\/em> of the European Socialists at the Europeans), of Dutch <strong>Wopke Hoekstra<\/strong> (Commissioner for Climate Action), Polish <strong>Janusz Wojciechowski<\/strong> (Commissioner for Agriculture), Portuguese <strong>Elisa Ferreira<\/strong> (Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms), Swedish <strong>Ylva Johansson<\/strong> (Commissioner for Home Affairs), and Italian <strong>Paolo Gentiloni<\/strong> (Commissioner for Economy).<\/p>\n<p>Then there are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/11\/eu-commission-towards-a-reshuffle-three-commissioners-set-to-leave-for-new-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">three commissioners expected to take office as MEPs<\/a> after the successful outcome of the European elections, unless the respective governments indicate otherwise before the inaugural session of the EU Parliament on July 16: Croatia&#8217;s <strong>Dubravka \u0160uica<\/strong> (Vice-President for Democracy and Demography), Lithuania&#8217;s <strong>Virginijus Sinkevi\u010dius<\/strong> (Commissioner for Environment, Oceans, and Fisheries) and Romania&#8217;s <strong>Adina V\u0103lean<\/strong> (Commissioner for Transport). On the other hand, Belgian <strong>Didier Reynders<\/strong>(Commissioner for Justice) is running is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/28\/commissioner-reynders-will-be-on-leave-from-april-25-to-try-to-climb-the-council-of-europe-ladder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">running<\/a> for the post of secretary general of the Council of Europe and will require the outgoing government after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/belgium-right-de-croo-resignation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 9 federal election<\/a> to find a new candidate.
