{"id":369518,"date":"2024-06-12T19:54:35","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T17:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/06\/12\/4-nuovi-deputati-sono-77-i-seggi-per-ecr\/"},"modified":"2024-06-18T11:23:41","modified_gmt":"2024-06-18T09:23:41","slug":"conservatives-welcome-4-new-meps-77-seats-for-the-ecr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/12\/conservatives-welcome-4-new-meps-77-seats-for-the-ecr\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservatives welcome 4 new MEPs, 77 seats for the ECR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211;<strong>The Group of European Conservatives (ECR) is renewed and enlarged<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/Wise%20PLC's%20Lowered%20Guidance%20Underwhelms%20--%20Market%20Talk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">To the 73 MEPs rewarded\u00a0at the polls in last weekend&#8217;s European elections<\/a>, <strong>four more are added<\/strong> from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/pro-life-pro-russian-populists-and-nazi-sympathisers-european-parliaments-new-parties-underground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the new parties<\/a>\u00a0that, for the first time, bring a representative to Brussels. <strong>The number of seats <\/strong>for the group, where Fratelli d&#8217;Italia, the party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, sits,<strong>\u00a0\u00a0therefore rises to 77.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the newcomers is\u00a0<strong>Croatian Stjepo Bartulica<\/strong> of Patriotic Movement (DP), a formation that also looked to the ID sovereignty group for possible alliances. A seat thus snatched from right-wing competition. Also joining the European conservatives is the\u00a0<strong>Cypriot, Geadi Geadis,<\/strong> of the National Popular Front, which openly declares itself as\u00a0no-vax and is accused of neo-fascist sympathies: a natural fit for\u00a0Geadis given the pre-existing ties with the ECR group and, particularly, FdI. Other new\u00a0entries include\u00a0t<strong>he Latvian from Lista Unita (AS), Reinis Poznaks,<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Fernand Kartheiser<\/strong> of the reformist Democratic Alternative Party (ADR) in Luxembourg. It is the first time the grand duchy is represented within the ECR.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&#8220;Our steady growth proves that our political project, which advocates a middle ground that seeks a better balance of expertise between Brussels and the national capitals, is credible and attractive,&#8221; comments <strong>Nicola Procaccini,<\/strong> the group&#8217;s current co-chair, whose joy may not end there. The conservatives say this is just\u00a0a first reorganization, and <strong>further new admissions may come later.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We expect other delegations to join in the next round of admissions,&#8221; the ECR said. However, it will be necessary to\u00a0wait as the final make-up of the group will be decided on June 26, when it will elect the Presidency Office, with Italy, the first delegation, vying to become its leader.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For now, there is no talk\u00a0of an entry of Fidesz, the party of the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orban<\/strong>.
