Tops and flops of the European elections in Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updates from June 25 to July 1.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On June 25, the <strong>Green-Left Alliance<\/strong> has announced the official nomination of <strong>Ilaria Salis<\/strong> and <strong>Benedetta Scuderi<\/strong> in the Northwest constituency, <strong>Cristina Guarda<\/strong> in the Northeast constituency, <strong>Ignazio Marino<\/strong> in the Center constituency, <strong>Domenico Lucano<\/strong> in the South constituency, and <strong>Leoluca Orlando<\/strong> in the Islands constituency. Scuderi, Guarda, Marino and Orlando will be part of The Greens\/Efa Group, Salis and Lucano will be part of The Left Group.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On June 25, the <strong>Democratic Party<\/strong> has announced the official nomination of <strong>Alessandro Zan<\/strong> in the Northeast constituency, while <strong>Pierfrancesco Maran<\/strong> is elected in the Northwest constituency.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On July 1, <strong>Lega <\/strong>has announced the official nomination of <strong>Roberto Vannacci<\/strong> in the Northwest constituency, while <strong>Paolo Borchia<\/strong> is elected in the Northeast constituency, <strong>Susanna Ceccardi<\/strong> in the Center constituency and <strong>Aldo Patriciello<\/strong> in the South constituency.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Brussels &#8211; On the fourth post-European elections day, the picture of the\u00a0<strong>76 elected Italian MEPs<\/strong> who will officially take office in the EU Parliament for the next five-year term in Strasbourg on July 16 is becoming increasingly clearer. <strong>There are still a few uncertainties and unofficial decisions<\/strong>, which depend on the choices of the head candidates or the multi-elected of\u00a0the constituency in which to get elected (the former) and on the communication of formal withdrawal by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/04\/29\/meloni-will-also-be-a-leading-candidate-in-the-european-elections-the-strategy-of-running-for-office-pretending-started-ten-years-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;facade&#8221; candidates <\/a>(the latter).\u00a0The coming hours will be decisive, given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/13\/groups-committees-and-plenary-all-the-dates-for-the-establishment-of-the-new-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tight timelines<\/a> for the formation of political groups in the EU Parliament with all national delegations and their respective members.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717975995779_20240609_EP-169765A_DE1_203.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-368366 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717975995779_20240609_EP-169765A_DE1_203-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"European Elections 2024 EU Parliament\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717975995779_20240609_EP-169765A_DE1_203-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717975995779_20240609_EP-169765A_DE1_203-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717975995779_20240609_EP-169765A_DE1_203-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717975995779_20240609_EP-169765A_DE1_203-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717975995779_20240609_EP-169765A_DE1_203-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1717975995779_20240609_EP-169765A_DE1_203-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The results of the 2024 European elections confirmed <strong>Fratelli d&#8217;Italia<\/strong> as the leading political force with 28.76 per cent of the vote and 24 MEPs elected for the 10th term of the EU Parliament. The first place of the party&#8217;s chairwoman and Italian premier, <strong>Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>, unlocks the top losers in all five constituencies, including outgoing MEP <strong>Chiara Gemma<\/strong> in the Southern one. Speaking of outgoing MEPs, there are six who will remain in Brussels, including the co-chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, <strong>Nicola Procaccini<\/strong>, and the head of the delegation <strong>Carlo Fidanza<\/strong>. Also passing the ballot test are <strong>Giovanni Crosetto<\/strong>, nephew of the defence minister (Guido), and Veneto Regional Councilwoman <strong>Elena Donazzan<\/strong>, while <strong>Vittorio Sgarbi<\/strong> in the South and the now former MEP <strong>Vincenzo Sofo<\/strong>, husband of France&#8217;s far-right Reconqu\u00eate vice-president, <span class=\"mw-page-title-main\"><strong>Marion Mar\u00e9chal\u00a0<\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/13\/marion-marechal-the-leading-candidate-for-reconquete-at-european-elections-was-expelled-from-the-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just expelled from party<\/a>), remain excluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The convincing electoral performance\u00a0of the <strong>Democratic Party<\/strong>\u2014which with its 21 new members will become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/pd-first-delegation-of-socialists-sd-group-leader-will-be-italian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the largest delegation<\/a> within the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&amp;D) group\u2014also shows a number of new political heavyweights taking office in the EU Parliament: the president of the Emilia-Romagna region, <strong>Stefano Bonaccini<\/strong>, the outgoing mayors of Bergamo, <strong>Giorgio Gori<\/strong>, Florence, <strong>Dario Nardella<\/strong>, and Bari, <strong>Antonio Decaro<\/strong>, the former President of the Lazio region, <strong>Nicola Zingaretti<\/strong>, former Senator <strong>Sandro Ruotolo<\/strong>, as well as former President of Emergency, <strong>Cecilia Strada<\/strong>, and journalists <strong>Lucia Annunziata<\/strong> and <strong>Marco Tarquinio<\/strong>. MEP <strong>Alessandro Zan<\/strong> has yet to lift his reservation on whether he will be elected in the Northwest or Northeast constituency, there are six\u00a0confirmations among the outgoing MEPs, including <strong>Brando Benifei<\/strong>, the head of delegation.\u00a0Among the big losers are <strong>Patrizia Toia<\/strong> and <strong>Pietro Bartolo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The formal withdrawal from the race by Forza Italia President and Deputy Prime Minister <strong>Antonio Tajani<\/strong> is expected any day now, unblocking the first losers\u00a0in the Northwest, Northeast, Center and South constituencies.\u00a0It will benefit outgoing MEPs <strong>Massimiliano Salini<\/strong> (Northwest) and <strong>Salvatore De Meo<\/strong> (Center), while former Verona mayor<strong> Flavio Tosi<\/strong> will arrive in Brussels along with his seven other colleagues. Among the members of the delegation in the ninth term of the EU Parliament are confirmed <strong>Fulvio Martusciello<\/strong>, as well as <strong>Herbert Dorfmann<\/strong> of <strong>S\u00fcdtiroler Volkspartei<\/strong> (member of the European People&#8217;s Party group), while the six\u00a0left out also include <strong>Alessandra Mussolini<\/strong> (the first candidate in the southern constituency, <strong>Caterina Chinnici<\/strong>, has been re-elected after <strong>Edy Tamajo<\/strong>&#8216;s renouncing).\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Schermata-2022-11-09-alle-21.05.40.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-186967 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Schermata-2022-11-09-alle-21.05.40-300x199.png\" alt=\"Sessione Plenaria Parlamento Ue Eurodeputati\" width=\"449\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Schermata-2022-11-09-alle-21.05.40-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Schermata-2022-11-09-alle-21.05.40-1024x680.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Schermata-2022-11-09-alle-21.05.40-768x510.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Schermata-2022-11-09-alle-21.05.40-1536x1019.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Schermata-2022-11-09-alle-21.05.40.png 1582w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The collapse of the <strong>Lega<\/strong> also resulted in a haemorrhage in the number of elected MEPs (8) and confirmed former members of the delegation (6 out of 16 candidates). There will certainly be <strong>Silvia Sardone<\/strong>, <strong>Isabella Tovaglieri <\/strong>and the fresh &#8220;acquisition&#8221;\u00a0<strong>Raffaele Stancanelli<\/strong> (first in the Islands constituency), while the choice of <strong>Roberto Vannacci<\/strong> (first in Northwest, Northeast, Center and South) will leave out one among\u00a0<strong>Paolo Borchia<\/strong>, <strong>Susanna Ceccardi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Angelo Ciocca,<\/strong> and <strong>Aldo Patriciello<\/strong>. Sources inside the Lega delegation do not confirm the news that Vannacci opted for the Northwest, cutting Ciocca out.<\/p>\n<p>Flop also for the <strong>5 Star Movement<\/strong> with eight\u00a0elected MEPs. Of the ex-members running for office, <strong>Maria Angela Danz\u00ec<\/strong> and <strong>Sabrina Pignedoli<\/strong> (first in the Northeast, but no one elected in the constituency) were left out, with only <strong>Mario Furore <\/strong>confirmed in the Southern constituency bringing four MEPs, including former president of INPS, <strong>Pasquale Tridico<\/strong>. Also returning to Brussels is former MEP in the M5S quota between 2014 and 2019\u00a0<strong>Dario Tamburrano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The picture remains very complicated for <strong>Green-Left Alliance<\/strong>, which for the time being sees <strong>Ilaria Salis<\/strong>, the mayor of Riace (re-elected on June 9),\u00a0<strong>Domenico Lucano<\/strong>, and the former mayor of Rome,\u00a0<strong>Ignazio Marino<\/strong>, the first two in the Italian Left quota and the third\u00a0 in Green Europe, as certain to take office in the EU Parliament. But the choices of the ones who are certain to make it to Brussels will decide the fate of five potential MEPs, who are vying for the remaining three seats: Young Greens&#8217; co-spokesperson in Europe, <strong>Benedetta Scuderi<\/strong> (fourth in the Northwest), the Greens&#8217; regional councilwoman in the Veneto Region <strong>Cristina Guarda <\/strong>(second in the Northeast), and the head of Rights and Freedom of the Italian Left, <strong>Marilena Grassadonia<\/strong> (second in the Center), Green Europe MEP <strong>Francesco Emilio Borrelli <\/strong>(second in the South), and former mayor of Palermo\u00a0<strong>Leoluca Orlando<\/strong> (third in the Islands).<\/p>\n<p>Among the outstanding exclusions is former S&amp;D MEP <strong>Massimiliano Smeriglio<\/strong>, as well as <strong>Rosa D&#8217;Amato<\/strong>, an ex-M5S and then independent in the Greens\/Ale group.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/results.elections.europa.eu\/it\/italia\/0006.png\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id='the-elected-italian-meps'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">The elected Italian MEPs<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Here you can find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/elezioni\/europee-2024\/preferenze-elezioni-europee-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the list of all elected MEPs<\/a> by constituency and party.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All the elected.
