After last week&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/11\/commission-presidency-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversy<\/a> over the attempt by the acting European Council president, <strong>Charles Michel<\/strong>, to exclude the EU Commission&#8217;s number one from the informal summit altogether &#8211; as she is also the main candidate to succeed herself &#8211; von der Leyen (with Metsola) will attend the first session of work, then leave the table when the 27 leaders are to talk about her position as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\u00a0If confirmed at today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/meetings\/european-council\/2024\/06\/17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">informal meeting<\/a>, the package of EU nominations &#8211; two to the European People&#8217;s Party (EPP), one to the Party of European Socialism (PES), and one to the Liberals of Renew Europe &#8211; will <strong>pass to the European Council scheduled for Thursday and Friday of next week (June 27-28) for official appointments<\/strong>. Only the election of the Presidency of the European Parliament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/13\/groups-committees-and-plenary-all-the-dates-for-the-establishment-of-the-new-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is the exclusive responsibility of the European Parliament<\/a>, while that of the European Commission will also have to go through the confirmation of the plenary session, where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/06\/10\/elezioni-europee-von-der-leyen-coalizione\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">there is already a clear majority<\/a> between Popular, Social Democrats, and Liberals (and with the possibility of entry of the Greens). I hope we can come to an agreement quickly,&#8221; said\u00a0the French president, <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong>, after an initial confrontation at last week&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/13\/g7-kicks-off-world-leaders-in-italy-africa-ukraine-and-middle-east-on-agenda-but-abortion-controversy-holds-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">G7 Summit<\/a> in Puglia, stressing, however, that &#8220;it&#8217;s a discussion\u00a0among\u00a0the Twenty-Seven.&#8221; The Elysee tenant, who on the eve of the European elections was the biggest unknown for von der Leyen&#8217;s confirmation, now faces campaigning for the snap\u00a0elections in France on June 30 and does not seem to have any interest in a delay\u00a0of EU nominations. In this regard,\u00a0<strong>Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni raised<\/strong> &#8211; also on the sidelines of the G7 &#8211; <strong>some doubts about the timing<\/strong>, calling &#8220;common sense&#8221; the possibility of waiting for the outcome of the French vote before the decision on the heads\u00a0of the EU institutions. In any case, Macron will always be the interlocutor at the European Council table and for Italy, the postponement &#8220;is not a prejudicial issue,&#8221; the Italian leader reassured. Opening decisively, however, is the German Chancellor, <strong>Olaf Scholz<\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ursula-von-der-leyen-european-commission-president-european-election-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told <\/a>a group of journalists at the end of the proceedings in Fasano that &#8220;<strong>there are all the signs that von der Leyen will be able to serve a second term<\/strong>,&#8221; particularly given the fact that decisions in Brussels on EU appointments must be made &#8220;very quickly&#8221; and &#8220;in one go&#8221; to &#8220;enable the European Union to act&#8221; in an uncertain and threatening global context.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-map\" data-src=\"visualisation\/18038724\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h3 id='the-package-of-eu-charges-on-the-table-of-the-twenty-seven'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">The package of EU charges on the table of the Twenty-Seven<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>The European People&#8217;s Party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/11\/populars-confirm-von-der-leyen-metsola-our-candidates-for-commission-and-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has already confirmed<\/a>\u00a0that, after the convincing electoral test of the national parties affiliated with the EPP, they expect to obtain <strong>both the Presidency of the Commission and that of the first two-and-a-half-year &#8220;round&#8221; of\u00a0Parliament<\/strong> in perfect continuity with the end of the ninth legislature, also in terms of the names: Germany&#8217;s von der Leyen and Malta&#8217;s Metsola, respectively. As for the former, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/von-der-leyen-wants-a-bastion-against-left-and-right-extremes-but-real-problem-is-governments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">there do not appear to be any credible alternatives at present<\/a> for the leadership of the Union&#8217;s executive, although von der Leyen must guard against the political uncertainty in several capitals after the European elections. As for the Presidency of the European Parliament, the leading name is still that of Metsola, who has been head of the EU institution since January 2022, and the likely election is expected to come at the inaugural plenary session of the tenth legislature between July 16 and 19. This card could earn the Estonian Premier a promotion to the head of the Union&#8217;s foreign policy as a statement of support for Kyiv that, after more than two years, is not likely to wane from Brussels.
