Slovakia reconfirms its EU Commissioner candidate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; While the attention of EU leaders is all on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/17\/eu-nomination-process-kicks-off-leaders-of-the-twenty-seven-in-brussels-to-reach-an-agreement-as-early-as-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">nominations of senior officials of Union institutions<\/a> at the informal summit held today (June 17), a little appetizer comes from Slovakia. &#8220;On the occasion of the informal meeting of EU leaders, I will inform our European partners that <strong>Slovakia&#8217;s candidate for our next European Commissioner is the current EU Commission Executive Vice-President, Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d<\/strong>,&#8221; continued Pellegrini &#8212; who replaced Slovakia&#8217;s Prime Minister, <strong>Robert Fico<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/06\/slovak-pm-fico-is-back-and-angrier-than-before-harsh-attack-on-the-opposition-and-the-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recovering from the assault<\/a>\u00a0suffered in May &#8212; and reiterating that &#8220;it is also an expression of continuity and appreciation for his solid position within the Commission.&#8221; <strong>In the event of reappointment, \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d would thus reach his fourth consecutive term<\/strong>: after serving as acting Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism, and Youth (between 2009 and 2010), the Slovak politician was appointed Vice-President for Inter-Institutional Relations and Strategic Perspectives in the Barroso II Commission (2010-2014), Commissioner for the Energy Union in the Juncker Commission (2014-2019), and Vice President for Inter-institutional Relations and Strategic Perspectives in the von der Leyen Commission (2019-2024), also taking over as Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal after the departure of his Dutch colleague, <strong>Frans Timmermans<\/strong>, in 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">It was the current Social Democratic members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/04\/08\/slovakia-chooses-nationalism-and-elects-pellegrini-president-pm-fico-celebrates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">red-brown government coalition in Slovakia<\/a>\u00a0that was\u00a0responsible for \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d&#8217;s first appointment and subsequent two confirmations at the Commission: in both 2009 and 2014, the current PM Fico was in office, while the last time, in 2019, the head of government in Bratislava was the current President Pellegrini, who, in 2024, in another capacity, took responsibility for the announcement. <strong>\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d has been a member of Fico<\/strong>&#8216;s Smer-Ssd party since 1999, and in Brussels,\u00a0Slovakia&#8217;s choice of candidates in the future team of European Commissioners\u00a0seemed almost a foregone conclusion. Opening the waltz\u00a0of candidates last week was Latvian Premier <strong>Evika Sili\u0146a<\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/11\/dombrovskis-opens-commissioner-candidates-waltz-on-von-der-leyen-bis-stage-to-be-built\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced\u00a0<\/a>the confirmation of the EU Commission&#8217;s current Executive Vice-President for the Economy, <strong>Valdis Dombrovskis<\/strong>, for another five years at the Commission\u00a0in the College of European Commissioners. In other words, a government unbalanced to the right will not be able to overlook the fact that it will have to cash in on the approval of the center-left as well: <strong>this is the case, for example, of Giorgia Meloni&#8217;s Italian government, which will have to look for a name that is also acceptable\u00a0for the Democratic Party<\/strong>, which in the new legislature constitutes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/pd-first-delegation-of-socialists-sd-group-leader-will-be-italian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the largest delegation <\/a>within the group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&amp;D).<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-map\" data-src=\"visualisation\/18038724\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h3 id='slovakia-latvia-and-the-race-for-the-future-eu-commission'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">Slovakia, Latvia and the race for the future EU Commission<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Of the 27 members of the current College of European Commissioners, <strong>there are a few with the prospect of remaining at the Commission\u00a0for another five years<\/strong>. In addition to von der Leyen running for confirmation as President, Latvia&#8217;s Dombrovskis reappointed from Riga,\u00a0Slovak \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d reappointed from Bratislava, Hungary&#8217;s <strong>Oliv\u00e9r V\u00e1rhelyi<\/strong> (Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy) also has a good chance.\u00a0Czech <strong>V\u011bra Jourov\u00e1<\/strong>(Vice-President for Values and Transparency), Bulgarian <strong>Iliana Ivanova<\/strong> (Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth), and Cypriot <strong>Stella Kyriakides<\/strong> (Commissioner for Health and Food Safety) can still play their cards. The respective countries have not experienced any upheavals in the past five years. \u00a0I<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/gerb-conservatives-still-first-party-in-bulgaria-political-uncertainty-persists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">n Bulgaria, the political situation has been uncertain for years<\/a>,\u00a0so\u00a0the presence of Gerb&#8217;s center-right\u00a0in government might be enough to confirm the appointment of the\u00a0Commissioner who took office\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2023\/09\/05\/iliana-ivanova-audizione-parlamento-ue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only one year ago<\/a>. It is the case of Denmark&#8217;s <strong>Margrethe Vestager<\/strong> (Vice-President for Digital and Commissioner for Competition), Finland&#8217;s <strong>Jutta Urpilainen<\/strong> (Commissioner for International Partnerships), the Luxembourger\u00a0<strong>Nicolas Schmit<\/strong> (Commissioner for Labor and Social Rights, as well as <em>Spitzenkandidat<\/em> of the European Socialists at the Europeans),\u00a0Dutch <strong>Wopke Hoekstra<\/strong> (Commissioner for Climate Action), Poland&#8217;s <strong>Janusz Wojciechowski<\/strong> (Commissioner for Agriculture), Portugal&#8217;s <strong>Elisa Ferreira<\/strong> (Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms), Sweden&#8217;s <strong>Ylva Johansson<\/strong> (Commissioner for Home Affairs), and Italy&#8217;s <strong>Paolo Gentiloni<\/strong> (Commissioner for Economy).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Then there are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/11\/eu-commission-towards-a-reshuffle-three-commissioners-set-to-leave-for-new-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">three European Commissioners expected to take office as MEPs<\/a> after the successful outcome of the European elections, unless the respective governments indicate otherwise before the inaugural session of the EU Parliament on July 16: Croatia&#8217;s <strong>Dubravka \u0160uica<\/strong> (Vice-President for Democracy and Demography), Lithuania&#8217;s <strong>Virginijus Sinkevi\u010dius<\/strong> (Commissioner for Environment, Oceans, and Fisheries), and Romania&#8217;s <strong>Adina V\u0103lean<\/strong> (Commissioner for Transport). On the other hand, Belgian <strong>Didier Reynders\u00a0<\/strong>(Commissioner for Justice) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/28\/commissioner-reynders-will-be-on-leave-from-april-25-to-try-to-climb-the-council-of-europe-ladder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">running <\/a>for Secretary General of the Council of Europe and will impose on\u00a0the outgoing government after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/belgium-right-de-croo-resignation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 9 federal election<\/a> to find a new candidate.
