Liberals prepare response"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; These are hectic weeks in the halls and corridors of the European Parliament in Brussels, with national delegations and political groups intensifying their work and contacts to define the real balance of power in the upcoming legislature. This is how <strong>the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group managed to become the third largest in the European Parliament today (June 19), undermining Renew Europe<\/strong>. However, if\u2014for the first time\u2014the conservative right takes the lead in the head-to-head with the European liberals, the math will only be done at the end. They are the Danish <strong>Kristoffer Storm<\/strong> of the Danish Democrats (DA), the Bulgarian <strong>Ivaylo Valchev<\/strong> of There is Such a People(ITN), the Lithuanian<strong> Aurelijus Veryga<\/strong> of the Union of Peasants and Greens of Lithuania (Lv\u017es), the Romanians <strong>Claudiu-Richard Tarziu<\/strong>, <strong>Gheorghe Piperea<\/strong>, <strong>Maria-Georgiana Teodorescu<\/strong>, <strong>Adrian-George Axinia<\/strong> and <strong>Serban Dimitrie Sturdza <\/strong>from the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and the French <strong>Marion Mar\u00e9chal<\/strong>, <strong>Guillaume Peltier<\/strong> and <strong>Laurence Trochu<\/strong>, all three ex-Reconqu\u00eate and ready to found a new conservative nationalist formation (along with <strong>Nicolas Bay<\/strong>, already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/07\/eu-parliament-french-far-right-nationalist-reconquete-joins-ecr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">member of ECR<\/a> since February) after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/13\/marion-marechal-the-leading-candidate-for-reconquete-at-european-elections-was-expelled-from-the-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> expulsion from the party<\/a> due to internal controversy before early elections in France. The figure released on June 12 on the 77 total members &#8220;did not take into account the political changes that took place in France,&#8221; patches up the group in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ecrgroup.eu\/article\/ecr_group_continues_to_grow_83_seats_after_round_two_of_admissions_conserva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">note<\/a>, adding that &#8220;due to the fact that <strong>some members had to be readmitted <\/strong>[<em>5, ed.<\/em>]&#8221; the number of 83 MEPs confirmed today &#8220;appears to be lower than what a reader might expect from the last press release.&#8221; <strong>Now, the constituent meeting of the ECR group is expected to take place next Wednesday (June 26), when the chair will be elected<\/strong>. &#8220;My role is to organize the alternative front to the left,&#8221; Italy&#8217;s Prime Minister and chair of the ECR Party, <strong>Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>, said in Milan. &#8220;I think some surprises could come about the majorities built on the various dossiers in the European Parliament.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">After the announcement of the ECR group, the reaction of liberals in the EU Parliament is immediate.\u00a0&#8220;<strong>It&#8217;s absolutely premature; also, Renew Europe has ongoing negotiations with other forces<\/strong>,&#8221; sources inside the group told <em>LaPresse<\/em> news agency. &#8220;The race has started, it does not end today, we are well trained and we will see who comes best in the end, as true liberal democrats we like competition very much.&#8221; <strong>To date, the Renew Europe group has 80 seats<\/strong>, but it has been in talks for days with some newly elected members and others spilling over from the other European political families, including <strong>Belgian Yvan Verougstraete <\/strong>of<strong> Les Engag\u00e9s<\/strong>, a member of the French-speaking liberal party who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/19\/weber-epp-group-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just withdrawn<\/a> from the European People&#8217;s Party (EPP) group and expressed interest in joining the liberal family in the EU Parliament.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-parliament\" data-src=\"visualisation\/18466284\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ahead of the constituent meeting on June 26, 11 new members (with five readmissions) are admitted to the ECR group, raising the number of seats to 83.
