Renew Europe loses the 7 Czech members of ANO and moves away from the ECR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels&#8211;While Renew Europe was planning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/20\/renew-europe-ecr-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">try to counter-overtake<\/a> the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group as the third force in the EU Parliament, a cold\u00a0shower came from Prague for European Liberals. &#8220;<strong>Based on the negotiations, we came to the conclusion that Renew and ALDE simply have different positions than the ANO<\/strong> movement,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euractiv.cz\/section\/aktualne-v-eu\/news\/ano-opousti-evropske-liberaly-nemohli-jsme-plnit-nas-program-rika-babis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the Czech former Premier and leader of the controversial populist party of liberal-conservative orientation ANO 2011 (Action of Dissatisfied Citizens), <strong>Andrej<\/strong> <strong>Babi\u0161<\/strong>, who today (June 21) in the House of Representatives of the Czech Republic permanently ended his party&#8217;s experience in both the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) party and the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_176850\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 450px;\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_176850\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176850\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Schermata-2022-06-14-alle-14.53.29.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-176850\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Schermata-2022-06-14-alle-14.53.29-300x176.png\" alt=\"Andrej Babis Czech Republic\" width=\"450\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Schermata-2022-06-14-alle-14.53.29-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Schermata-2022-06-14-alle-14.53.29-768x452.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Schermata-2022-06-14-alle-14.53.29.png 874w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176850\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and leader of ANO 2011, Andrej Babi\u0161<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176850\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>We run the campaign\u00a0to fight illegal immigration, to change the Green Deal<\/strong>, which is destroying European industry and agriculture, and negatively impacting our citizens,&#8221; attacked Babi\u0161, who is well known in Brussels, especially for his conflicts of interest when he was Prime Minister of the Czech Republic between 2017 and 2021. But the real breaking point that prompted the leadership of ANO 2011 to decide on its exit from the European family of Liberals is the one involving the <strong>contrast with the pro-European and federalist positions of the ALDE and Renew Europe<\/strong>. A political knot that (for years) has not been possible to solve, as\u00a0the President of Renew Europe&#8217;s group in the EU Parliament, <strong>Val\u00e9rie Hayer<\/strong>, said, commenting on the news from Prague: &#8220;<strong>This divorce is long overdue. ANO has chosen a populist path incompatible<\/strong> with our values and identity.&#8221; In particular, &#8220;in the last month, their divergence from our values has increased exponentially, and we have witnessed it with great concern,&#8221; the French MEP stressed, reiterating that &#8220;<strong>ANO&#8217;s departure strengthens our pro-European values and our unity<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">A clear <strong>wink\u00a0to the five\u00a0Volt MEPs<\/strong>, who have already expressed their intention to remain in the Green\/ALE group but are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/20\/renew-europe-ecr-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">waiting for members&#8217; response<\/a> for a possible switch to the Renew Europe group (communication will come the morning of on June 24). The road is all uphill, but with the farewell of ANO 2011, <strong>European liberals will try to play all their remaining cards to convince the two Dutch and three Germans of the soundness of their pro-European project.<\/strong> With the critical issue of the\u00a0presence of the seven\u00a0Czechs solved, however, the question of the Dutch liberals&#8217; green light to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/16\/the-netherlands-ready-for-a-right-wing-government-agreement-found-after-six-months-wrath-of-european-greens-against-liberals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government with the far right in the Netherlands<\/a> remains. After suffering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/19\/ecr-group-european-parliament-renew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surge from the conservative right<\/a> on Wednesday (June 19) as the third group in the European Parliament, Renew Europe found itself with three\u00a0seats to make up &#8211; 180 to 183 &#8211; and only yesterday (June 20) he Belgium&#8217;s <strong>Yvan Verougstraete<\/strong> of Les Engag\u00e9shad announced his entry, bringing it to 181. Babi\u0161 explained to reporters that the party will decide\u00a0&#8220;in the coming weeks.&#8221; However,\u00a0he already ruled out joining the ECR as a solution: &#8220;<strong>Representatives of other Czech political parties have a big say, and the ECR is certainly not our choice<\/strong>.&#8221; The reference is specifically to the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) of Prime Minister <strong>Petr Fiala<\/strong> &#8211; which within the conservative right-wing group has three\u00a0members &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/10\/czech-republic-campaigning-also-done-on-the-faces-of-party-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of Babi\u0161&#8217;s biggest political opponents<\/a>. On the other hand, regarding\u00a0an &#8211; unlikely &#8211; <strong>approach to the European People&#8217;s Party (EPP), sources within the group call the possibility<\/strong> <strong>of an entry<\/strong> &#8220;absolutely absurd,&#8221; also recalling the parliamentary inquiries in Brussels conducted at the time when Babi\u0161 was Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. At the moment,\u00a0<strong>the most likely option is for the seven\u00a0Czech MEPs to end up in the group of non-aligned<\/strong>, relegating themselves to political irrelevance, even if\u00a0the leader of ANO 2011 suggested that they should beware of a &#8220;new group that will perhaps emerge.&#8221;
