Right after that, the government led by <strong>Alexander De Croo<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/10\/belgium-chooses-again-reynders-as-candidate-for-council-of-europe-secretariat-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a> its choice of the current European Commissioner for Justice as its<strong> candidate<\/strong> in the June 24-28 elections. At the end of March, the incumbent for Justice in the cabinet headed by <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/28\/commissioner-reynders-will-be-on-leave-from-april-25-to-try-to-climb-the-council-of-europe-ladder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the President\u00a0of the EU executive of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/03\/25\/reynders-segretario-consiglio-deuropa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommendation<\/a>\u00a0of the Committee of Ministers to the Parliamentary Assembly of his official candidacy and &#8211; ahead of\u00a0the election campaign &#8211; was granted <strong>unpaid leave from April 25<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">After yesterday&#8217;s defeat, Reynders should\u00a0return to his role within the European Commission for the final months of his term. However,\u00a0it is unclear what the 65-year-old politician&#8217;s future will be within the ranks of the French-speaking Reformist Movement (RM) party.
