Brussels – Didier Reynder, <\/strong>for the second consecutive time,\u00a0<\/strong>lost the race to become secretary-general of the Council of Europe. The parliamentary assembly of the Strasbourg-based human rights organization elected former president of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset<\/strong> to the Council of Europe summit late yesterday (June 25), ending the dream of the Belgian candidate\u00a0– the current European Commissioner for Justice – of taking revenge after his defeat in 2019.<\/p>\n

The vote<\/a> of the Parliamentary Assembly decreed that the succession of the incumbent secretary-general, Croatian Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107<\/strong>, would go to the Swiss candidate, who was confirmed\u00a0without appeal with 114 votes in favor (out of 245 validly cast).\u00a0Reynders comes in\u00a0third – and last –\u00a0with only 46 preferences<\/strong>, behind even former Estonian Minister of Culture\u00a0Indrek Saar\u00a0<\/strong>(85 votes). The term of office of the new secretary-general will start on September 18<\/strong> at the latest, the\u00a0international organization (which is not among the institutions of the European Union) said.<\/p>\n

In early January, the Belgian liberal politician announced<\/a> his readiness to run for the second consecutive time<\/strong> for the leadership of the Council of Europe. Right after that, the government led by Alexander De Croo<\/strong> confirmed<\/a> its choice of the current European Commissioner for Justice as its candidate<\/strong> in the June 24-28 elections. At the end of March, the incumbent for Justice in the cabinet headed by Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> told<\/a> the President\u00a0of the EU executive of the recommendation<\/a>\u00a0of the Committee of Ministers to the Parliamentary Assembly of his official candidacy and – ahead of\u00a0the election campaign – was granted unpaid leave from April 25<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After yesterday’s defeat, Reynders should\u00a0return to his role within the European Commission for the final months of his term. However,\u00a0it is unclear what the 65-year-old politician’s future will be within the ranks of the French-speaking Reformist Movement (RM) party. Considering the\u00a0June 9 Belgian election result<\/a>,\u00a0it is highly improbable\u00a0that he will be confirmed at the Commission\u00a0for the next institutional cycle<\/strong>, even in the case of a very likely second term von der Leyen Commission.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

In 2019, he lost to Croatia’s Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107.
