On the table always von der Leyen-Kallas-Costa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The European Council table is hot, and by dinnertime, the main course is ready: The EU nominations for the heads of the main institutions of the Union. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/12\/its-time-for-eu-appointments-parliament-and-commission-to-populars-socialists-aim-for-council-and-liberals-for-high-representative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The package is always the same<\/a>, but unlike the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/06\/18\/nomine-ue-consiglio-europeo-michel-unita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 17 informal meeting<\/a>, today (June 27) at the Europa Palace, there is a distinct feeling that the consensus among the overwhelming majority of the heads of state and government of the 27 EU member states is now solid, despite the fact that in the last twenty-four hours the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/27\/tusk-no-eu-without-italy-and-no-decision-without-pm-meloni-leaders-arrive-at-european-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meloni case<\/a>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/27\/tusk-no-eu-without-italy-and-no-decision-without-pm-meloni-leaders-arrive-at-european-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<\/a>has broken out. This is the basis for today&#8217;s discussions among the Twenty-seven, which are set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/25\/von-der-leyen-kallas-costa-negotiators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the deal reached between the six negotiators of the three European political families<\/a> Tuesday (June 25): Greek Prime Minister\u00a0<strong>Kyriakos Mitsotakis<\/strong>, Polish Prime Minister\u00a0<strong>Donald Tusk<\/strong> (for the European People&#8217;s Party), German Chancellor <strong>Olaf Scholz<\/strong>, and Spanish Prime Minister <strong>Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/strong> (for the Party of European Socialism), the French President <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong>, and the Dutch Prime Minister <strong>Mark Rutte<\/strong> (for Renew Europe). Polish Prime Minister Tusk confirmed. &#8220;This is not only an agreement between 27 heads of state and government, but <strong>also a question of what kind of political majority will have the presidency of the Commission in the European Parliament<\/strong>,&#8221; German Chancellor Scholz stressed, about the confirmation vote that \u2014in case of an agreement at this EU summit\u2014&#8221;can already be held\u00a0<strong>on July 18 during the inaugural plenary session in Strasbourg<\/strong>,&#8221; <strong>we\u00a0have three very good names, highly respected and well known for their capacity for dialogue<\/strong>&#8220;\u2014to outgoing Dutch premier Rutte (Renew)\u2014 &#8220;I expect a debate, but the three political families have an agreement&#8221;\u2014to the Irish Taoiseach, <strong>Simon Harris<\/strong>(EPP): &#8220;<strong>There is no doubt, there is a clear consensus<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the political composition of the governments represented at the European Council table, it is not surprising that an understanding between populars, socialists, and liberals leaves little room for doubt:\u00a0<strong>23 member countries out of 27 are led by leaders from one of these European families<\/strong>. Only Italy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/18\/melonis-wait-for-eu-nominations-she-doesnt-contest-leaders-proposals-but-her-turn-will-come-in-the-eu-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unhappy PM Meloni<\/a> is President of the Party of European Conservatives and Reformists), red-brown Slovakia represented today by President <strong>Robert Pellegrini<\/strong>, the Czech Republic (but the conservative premier, <strong>Petr Fiala<\/strong>, has already hinted that he will support the package) and the Hungary of <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>, who has remained the only real opponent both in terms of content and modalities: &#8220;The agreement is a disgrace and is not based on the election result.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/10\/von-der-leyen-wants-a-bastion-against-left-and-right-extremes-but-real-problem-is-governments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What the election said<\/a>, however, is that the EPP has been strengthened, that the centrist majority holds and, above all, that the far right has no chance of proposing alternative majorities.
