And unleashing the potential political earthquake is Hungary&#8217;s Prime Minister,<strong> Viktor Orb\u00e1n,<\/strong>\u00a0who, after the June 6-9 European elections,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/20\/orban-ecr-romania-aur-eu-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plotted behind the scenes<\/a> to place himself at the head of a new formation in the European sovereignist chessboard and not queue up with existing groups.\u00a0And so, the Hungarian Premier, together with the former Czech Prime Minister and leader of the populist liberal-conservative ANO 2011 party, <strong>Andrej Babi\u0161,<\/strong> and the President\u00a0of the Austrian Freedom Party (Fp\u00f6), <strong>Herbert Kickl<\/strong>, yesterday (June 30) gave rise to the <strong>Patriots for Europe, the new parliamentary force &#8211; for the time being only on paper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The July 4 deadline is not\u00a0peremptory. <\/strong>A parliamentary group can be established\u00a0at any time in the legislature. Soon, they should announce the political manifesto of Patriots for Europe. First and foremost, in the<strong>\u00a0Identity and Democracy (ID) group, which risks\u00a0falling apart<\/strong> after the announcement by the leader of Austria&#8217;s Fp\u00f6 and the first signs of openness given by some of its members. &#8220;We are evaluating all the documents.\u00a0However,\u00a0<strong>I think it may be the right way to make a large group<\/strong> <strong>that aspires to be the third<\/strong> <strong>in the European Parliament<\/strong>,&#8221; the League Secretary, <strong>Matteo Salvini,\u00a0<\/strong>said this morning (July 1)\u00a0after calling the emergence of a new &#8220;strong, patriotic, cohesive, and against ploys&#8221; group &#8220;positive&#8221; particularly on its support for <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/28\/von-der-leyens-tour-de-force-in-the-eu-parliament-three-weeks-to-convince-then-the-new-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmation to European Commission<\/a>. The Portuguese sovereignist right-wing Chega has declared that it will join the new project in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Without Fp\u00f6 (6), League (8), and Chega (2), <strong>the ID group would no longer have the numbers to<\/strong> <strong>exist and would have to go in search of new members<\/strong>.\u00a0The <strong>42 remaining<\/strong> (from the current 58) would be from <strong>only six\u00a0parties<\/strong>: the French of National Rally (30), the Belgians of Vlaams Belang (3), the Dutch of Party for Freedom (6), the Danes of Danish People&#8217;s Party (1), the Czechs of Freedom and Direct Democracy and Trikolora (1), and the Estonians of the Estonian Conservative People&#8217;s Party (1). <strong>The focus will\u00a0be on the moves of the National Rally<\/strong>, which is unlikely to accept dropping to second-to-last place among the groups in the EU Parliament (ahead only of the Left with 39) but has not yet made known its intentions to end the Identity and Democracy experience to join another group, whether it be Patriots for Europe or even the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/27\/le-pen-meloni-alliance-eu-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">single camp with the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR)<\/a> of the Italian Premier, <strong>Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>. Just as the moves of the 15 MEPs of the radical right-wing German <strong>Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland <\/strong>(AfD), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/23\/eu-parliaments-identity-and-democracy-group-expels-afd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expelled from the ID group<\/a> in May and since yesterday also officially withdrawn from the European party,\u00a0will have to be evaluated. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/28\/the-right-wing-that-was-supposed-to-overthrow-the-european-union-is-likely-to-find-itself-even-more-divided-and-quarrelsome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an increasingly divided and quarrelsome European right-wing<\/a> scenario, potential members of Patriots for Europe could also be taken away from Meloni&#8217;s group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/31\/orban-pushes-for-single-meloni-le-pen-camp-the-sovereignist-future-in-europe-in-the-hands-of-two-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s closest ally<\/a> at the table of EU leaders. Among them are the Spaniards of Vox (6), for example, although\u00a0<strong>the big fish are the 20 Poles of Law and Justice (PiS) of former Premier Mateusz Morawiecki<\/strong>, who, however, are politically at odds with the Hungarians of Fidesz over the relationship with Putin&#8217;s Russia.
