The <a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2024\/ga12601.doc.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolution<\/a><strong>\u00a0&#8220;condemns without reservation&#8221; any denial of the Srebrenica genocide as a historical event<\/strong>, as well as &#8220;actions that glorify those convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide by international courts.&#8221; All member states are also asked to <strong>develop &#8220;appropriate programs,&#8221; including in educational systems,<\/strong> &#8220;to prevent denial and distortion and the occurrence of genocide in the future.&#8221; The united front in support of the resolution was soured by the abstention of Greece and Slovakia, but especially by the <strong>opposition of Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>&#8216;s Hungary, the major ally of Serbia and Republika Srpska (the Serb-majority entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina) in the Union.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In July 1995, there were at least 8,372 Bosnian civilians &#8211; all male, ethnic Muslims &#8211; massacred by the Bosnian Serb forces of Ratko Mladi\u0107<\/strong> (not coincidentally referred to as &#8216;the butcher of Bosnia&#8217;) near the Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia. Nearly 30 years have passed since that massacre-the largest in terms of casualties in a few days &#8211; of <strong>a genocide that lasted three-and-a-half years<\/strong>, from April 1992 to the Dayton Accords of December 14, 1995.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_363658\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-363658\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_9BA8VU-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-363658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_9BA8VU-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"Genocidio Srebrenica Bosnia\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_9BA8VU-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_9BA8VU-1024x616.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_9BA8VU-768x462.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_9BA8VU-1536x923.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_9BA8VU-2048x1231.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_9BA8VU-750x451.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_9BA8VU-1140x685.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-363658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Memorial of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, Bosnia and Herzegovina (credits: Elvis Barukcic \/ Afp)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We call upon the leaders to reject divisive rhetoric and act with truth, justice, trust, and dialogue,&#8221; Borrell and V\u00e1hrelyi said. &#8220;<strong>Healing the wounds of the past requires acknowledging and teaching the historical facts, honoring and remembering the victims, identifying those still missing, and bringing all perpetrators to justice,<\/strong>&#8221; and,\u00a0 most importantly, &#8220;confront the roots of hatred that led to the genocide.&#8221; Two years ago, the film <em><a href=\"https:\/\/multimedia.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/video\/v_I215619\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quo Vadis, Aida?<\/a> <\/em>based on the events that saw thousands of Bosnian women in Srebrenica received the <a href=\"https:\/\/luxaward.eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Lux Award<\/a>\u00a0of the Audience for European Cinema in the hemicycle of the European Parliament. &#8220;We need to build together bridges to reconciliation. <strong>There is no place amongst us for those who deny genocide, attempt to rewrite history, and glorify war criminals<\/strong>.,&#8221;\u00a0Borrell and V\u00e1hrelyi added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">That of the Srebrenica genocide is one of the many reasons\u00a0of confrontation between Brussels and <strong>Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>&#8216;s Serbia, but also within Bosnia and Herzegovina, where <strong>Bosnian Serb President, Milorad Dodik, is attempting a secessionist project and is one of the strongest deniers<\/strong> of the excesses of the 1990s war. The rifts within the Balkan country and the European Union itself &#8212; for which Hungary is the thorn in its side &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/04\/18\/republika-srpska-bosnias-eu-path\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">risks jeopardizing Sarajevo&#8217;s path to EU membership<\/a>, despite the European Council&#8217;s decision on\u00a0March 21 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/21\/bosnia-and-herzegovina-eu-membership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to begin accession negotiations. <\/a>&#8220;<strong>We reiterate our unequivocal commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina\u2019s future in the EU as a single, united and sovereign country<\/strong>,&#8221;
