Among the 14 Vice Presidents are Picierno (PD) and Sberna (FdI)."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><em>From the envoy in Strasbourg<\/em> &#8211; After the Presidency of the EU Parliament, the European People&#8217;s Party (EPP) also takes home its first, second, and third Vice-Presidency. <strong>A new political masterpiece for the parliamentary group most strengthened after the June 6-9<\/strong> elections, with none of the controversy and backlash seen two-and-a-half-years ago, but still of great significance for the <em>en plein <\/em>on the podium of deputies of <strong>Roberta Metsola<\/strong>. The consolation for the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&amp;D) group is the election of more than a third of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/it\/press-room\/20240710IPR22814\/il-parlamento-elegge-11-nuovi-vicepresidenti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14 Vice Presidents<\/a> and, more specifically for the Democratic Party, <strong>the confirmation of outgoing Pina Picierno<\/strong> <strong>for another term<\/strong>. In the second round of voting, <strong>Fratelli d&#8217;Italia scores a historic result with the election of one of its MEPs, Antonella Sberna<\/strong>, to the post of right hand to the President. Germany&#8217;s <strong>Sabine Verheyen<\/strong> (604), Poland&#8217;s <strong>Ewa Kopacz<\/strong> (572), and Spain&#8217;s <strong>Esteban Gonz\u00e1lez Pons<\/strong> (478) &#8211; the five Social Democrats &#8211; Germany&#8217;s <strong>Katarina Barley<\/strong> (450), outgoing Vice President <strong>Pina Picierno<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/12\/pina-picierno-to-start-the-work-of-the-new-parliament-by-managing-the-election-of-the-new-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(who opened the inaugural session of the EU Parliament,<\/a> (405), the Romanian <strong>Victor Negrescu<\/strong> (394), Denmark&#8217;s <strong>Christel Schaldemose<\/strong> (378) and Spain&#8217;s <strong>Javi L\u00f3pez<\/strong> (377) &#8211; the two from Renew Europe &#8211; Slovak <strong>Martin Hojs\u00edk<\/strong> (393), and Belgium&#8217;s <strong>Sophie Wilm\u00e8s<\/strong> (371) &#8211; and Romania&#8217;s Green <strong>Nicolae \u0218tef\u0103nu\u021b\u0103<\/strong> (347). Not only against\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/10\/there-is-another-group-in-the-eu-parliament-even-further-to-the-right-than-the-patriots-it-is-europe-of-sovereign-nations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe of Sovereign Nations<\/a>\u00a0group\u00a0(which has\u00a0only 25 members and is the smallest group) but more importantly towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/08\/the-patriots-for-europe-group-springs-up-in-the-eu-parliament-it-is-the-third-largest-the-league-is-also-a-part\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patriots for Europe<\/a>, which, with 84 members, represents the third largest group in the EU Parliament. With the minimum threshold lowered to 305 votes (out of 609 validly cast), the two conservatives &#8211; Latvia&#8217;s <strong>Roberts Z\u012ble<\/strong> (confirmed with 490) and <strong>Antonella Sberna<\/strong> (314), the first Italian radical right-wing MEP elected as Vice-President of the EU Parliament &#8211; and the Left&#8217;s candidate, France&#8217;s <strong>Younous Omarjee<\/strong> (311), were thus elected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">While the conservative right-wing\u00a0finds further legitimacy in the top posts of the EU Parliament &#8211; Latvian Z\u012ble had already been elected Vice-President in January 2022 &#8211; already since the beginning of the tenth term, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/11\/conservatives-patriots-sovereignists-why-there-are-three-different-far-right-groups-in-the-eu-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the even more\u00a0sovereignist and extreme right<\/a>\u00a0has been marginalized from political discourse in Strasbourg and Brussels. The three losers in the vote test are ESN&#8217;s candidate &#8211; the Polish Kondeferacja <strong>Ewa Zaj\u0105czkowska-Hernik <\/strong>(46 votes) &#8211; and the PfE&#8217;s two choices, the Czech from ANO 2011 <strong>Kl\u00e1ra Dost\u00e1lov\u00e1<\/strong> (116), and the former Frontex director elected from the ranks of the French National Rally <strong>Fabrice Leggeri <\/strong>(177).<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-parliament\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After Roberta Metsola&#8217;s confirmation as Chair, the Populars also secured a deputy (Sabine Verheyen), while the Social Democrats elected a third, including the outgoing PD MEP.
