Condemnation of the &#8220;war crimes and crimes against humanity&#8221; carried out by the regime of<strong> Vladimir Putin<\/strong> is the\u00a0fil rouge that leads directly to the <em>j&#8217;accuse<\/em> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/08\/orban-loose-cannon-at-the-head-of-the-council-goes-to-china-the-third-trip-kept-secret-from-brussels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">&#8220;peace missions&#8221; by Hungarian prime minister<\/a>: &#8220;In the aftermath of the so-called peace mission of the Hungarian prime minister <strong>Russia attacked the Okhmatdyt children&#8217;s hospital in Kyiv, which demonstrated the irrelevance of Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s alleged efforts<\/strong>, which were received with scepticism by the Ukrainian leadership.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"doceo-font-family-base doceo-font-size-base\">The resolution makes it clear that &#8220;<strong>the Hungarian prime minister cannot claim to represent the EU when he violates its common positions<\/strong>&#8221; and calls for &#8220;such a violation to be followed by repercussions for Hungary,&#8221; a member country that holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union until Dec. 31. &#8220;No one should negotiate with Putin instead of Ukraine,&#8221; is the attack by Poland&#8217;s <strong>Andrzej<\/strong> <\/span><strong>Halicki<\/strong> (EPP), echoed by the chairwoman of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&amp;D) group, <strong>Iratxe Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, recoiling against the new far-right group<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/08\/the-patriots-for-europe-group-springs-up-in-the-eu-parliament-it-is-the-third-largest-the-league-is-also-a-part\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> (third in number of members)<\/a> in the EU Parliament: &#8220;<strong>We are witnessing the connivance of the far right even in this House with Putin&#8217;s regime<\/strong>; the head of the False Patriots group [<em>for Europe, ed.<\/em>] met with him to denigrate the EU, to proclaim that it has a peace plan that no one knows about, and to promote Russian expansionism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_378895\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 450px;\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_378895\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-378895\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1721202968379_20240717_EP-170515E_LD2_EG_011-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-378895\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1721202968379_20240717_EP-170515E_LD2_EG_011-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan Bardella\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1721202968379_20240717_EP-170515E_LD2_EG_011-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1721202968379_20240717_EP-170515E_LD2_EG_011-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1721202968379_20240717_EP-170515E_LD2_EG_011-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1721202968379_20240717_EP-170515E_LD2_EG_011-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1721202968379_20240717_EP-170515E_LD2_EG_011-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1721202968379_20240717_EP-170515E_LD2_EG_011-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1721202968379_20240717_EP-170515E_LD2_EG_011-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-378895\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patriots for Europe (PfE) group president Jordan Bardella (July 17, 2024)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<p>German <strong>Sergey Lagodinsky<\/strong> (Greens\/Ale) also speaks of &#8220;false patriots,&#8221; while Renew Europe group chair <strong>Val\u00e9rie Hayer<\/strong> denounced the &#8220;self-appointed peace mission, using the EU without any mandate.&#8221; Not siding with the resolution is the Left group because, according to co-chair <strong>Martin Schirdewan<\/strong>, &#8220;a negotiation is needed but the EU has taken no initiative;<strong> sending more weapons will not bring an end to the war<\/strong>.&#8221; Strenuous defence of Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s actions came from the President of Patriots for Europe, <strong>Jordan Bardella<\/strong>, and that of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/07\/10\/europa-delle-nazioni-sovrane-gruppo-ue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the group further to the right<\/a>, Europe of Sovereign Nations, <strong>Ren\u00e9 Aust<\/strong>. The former conceded that Russia&#8217;s is &#8220;an illegal and unjustified war of aggression&#8221; but counter-attacked, arguing that &#8220;<strong>condemnation of Orb\u00e1n jeopardizes European unity<\/strong>; Hungary cannot be blamed for maintaining peace contacts.&#8221; The latter called for &#8220;a change of strategy&#8221; because &#8220;<strong>the time is ripe for peace talks, and I am grateful to Orb\u00e1n<\/strong> for taking responsibility even if there is resistance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 id='the-crux-of-the-first-resolution-in-the-eu-parliament'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">The crux of the first resolution in the EU Parliament<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">If the condemnation of Orb\u00e1n united the five groups from the Conservatives to the Greens, the same cannot be said on a particularly sensitive point of the resolution, namely paragraph 5. More specifically, the specification that the EU Parliament &#8220;<strong>strongly supports the lifting of restrictions on the use of Western weapons systems supplied to Ukraine against military targets on Russian territory<\/strong>.&#8221; On this point, there was a split in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/PV-10-2024-07-17-RCV_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vote<\/a>, where\u2014for different reasons\u2014<strong>almost all Democratic Party MEPs voted against<\/strong> the passage supporting the use of Western weapons to strike military targets in Russia (as the wording could also mean, absurdly, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow), <strong>as did Greens Leoluca Orlando, Cristina Guarda, and Benedetta Scuderi<\/strong>, but especially <strong>the eight members of the League of Patriots for Europe <\/strong>(who, as of today, do not have a pro-Russian setting) <strong>and the eight members of the 5 Star Movement<\/strong>. Speaking of the Left Group, <strong>Domenico Lucano<\/strong> and <strong>Ilaria Salis<\/strong> abstained on the issue, as did all the MEPs of Fratelli d&#8217;Italia.<\/p>\n<p>Since all amendments were rejected, the original text remained unchanged, <strong>supported finally by all members of Fratelli d&#8217;Italia, Forza Italia, and the Democratic Party<\/strong> (except only <strong>Marco Tarquinio<\/strong> and <strong>Cecilia Strada<\/strong>, who abstained).
