Luigi Soreca for Bosnia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The new term of EU special representatives just approved by the Council of the European Union also includes <strong>two Italian diplomats<\/strong>, one with a new role and one confirmed in his post serving the interests of the Twenty-seven in key countries and regions of the world. <strong>Luigi Soreca<\/strong> was appointed EU special representative for <strong>Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/strong>, while <strong>Emanuela Claudia Del Re<\/strong> was confirmed until Nov. 30 for the <strong>Sahel region<\/strong>. In addition to Soreca for Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a two-year term) and Del Re for the Sahel region (confirmed for another four months), as of Sept. 1, Sweden&#8217;s <strong>Johan Borgstam <\/strong>will be assigned to the <strong>African Great Lakes region<\/strong> (for one year), Czech <strong>Magdalena Grono <\/strong>will be in charge of <strong>Southern Caucasus and Crisis in Georgia<\/strong> (for one year) and Estonian <strong>Aivo Orav <\/strong>of <strong>Kosovo<\/strong> (for two years), while Slovakian <strong>Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k <\/strong>will remain until January 31, 2025, for the <strong>Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other Western Balkan regional issues<\/strong>, and German <strong>Annette Weber <\/strong>until August 31, 2026, for the <strong>Horn of Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">&#8220;I am proud to have been appointed by the Council of the European Union as the Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina,&#8221; is Soreca&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LSorecaEU\/status\/1816795503310336393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comment<\/a> in a post on X, recalling the &#8220;<strong>crucial moment in the EU integration journey<\/strong>&#8221; for the Balkan country after the European Council&#8217;s decision last March 21 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/21\/bosnia-and-herzegovina-eu-membership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">start accession negotiations <\/a>(although the road remains strewn with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/21\/bosnia-and-herzegovina-eu-membership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">numerous institutional obstacles<\/a>). These <strong>representatives provide the Union with an &#8220;active political presence&#8221;<\/strong> in countries and regions considered key to the Twenty-Seven, acting as the <strong>&#8220;voice and face&#8221; of EU policies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To date, ten special representatives are developing EU foreign and security policy, and they will rise in just over a month to 11 with the reopening of the position in the African Great Lakes region: in <strong>Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/strong> (Johann Sattler, from Sept. 1 Luigi Soreca), for <strong>Central Asia<\/strong> (Terhi Hakala), for the <strong>Horn of Africa<\/strong> (Annette Weber), for <strong>Human Rights<\/strong> (Eamon Gilmore), for <strong>Kosovo<\/strong> (Tom\u00e1\u0161 Szuyog; Aivo Orav from Sept. 1), for the <strong>Middle East Peace Process<\/strong> (Sven Koopmans), for the <strong>Sahel<\/strong> (Emanuela Claudia Del Re), for the <strong>Southern Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia<\/strong> (Toivo Klaar; Magdalena Grono from Sept. 1), for the <strong>Great Lakes <\/strong>(from Sept. 1, Johan Borgstam), for the <strong>Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other regional issues in the Western Balkans<\/strong> (Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k), and for the <strong>Gulf<\/strong> (Luigi Di Maio).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Together with Emanuela Claudia Del Re (confirmed for Sahel) and Luigi Di Maio (until Feb. 28, 2025 for the Gulf), this brings to three (out of 11) the number of Italian diplomats providing the European Union with an &#8220;active political presence&#8221; in key countries and regions for the Twenty-Seven.
