Lite Rewards program withdrawn from EU territory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; It took just over three months for the European Commission to prevail over\u00a0TikTok and successfully close its first investigation under Digital Services Act rules. Today (Aug. 5), the EU executive\u00a0made\u00a0<strong>commitments by TikTok to permanently withdraw its Lite Rewards program from the entire EU\u00a0binding<\/strong> as a follow-up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/04\/22\/european-commission-threatens-to-block-tiktok-lite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">formal procedure <\/a>that began on Apr. 22 over concerns about the physical and mental health of online users.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese platform &#8211; a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/19\/the-digital-services-act-begins-with-an-investigation-into-possible-tiktok-violations-in-the-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gatekeeper\u00a0<\/a>according to the EU Digital Services Act &#8211; committed to &#8220;<strong>definitely withdraw the TikTok Lite Rewards program from the EU<\/strong>&#8221; and also to &#8220;<strong>not launch any other program that would circumvent the withdrawal<\/strong>,&#8221; the EU Commission\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_4161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. &#8220;The available brain time of young Europeans is not a currency for social media \u2014 and it never will be,&#8221;\u00a0 Internal Market <strong>Thierry Breton <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_4161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>Today&#8217;s decision makes these commitments legally binding, meaning that <strong>any violation would immediately amount to a breach\u00a0of the Digital Services Act, resulting in fines<\/strong> (of up to 6 percent of global revenues).<\/p>\n<p>TikTok Lite Rewards is\u00a0a new\u00a0separate version of the TikTok Lite app,\u00a0launched in April in Spain and France. <strong>The program allows users to earn points by performing certain activities on TikTok Lite<\/strong>, such as viewing videos, putting &#8216;<em>likes&#8217;<\/em> to content, following <em>content creators,<\/em> or inviting friends to join TikTok. The Commission was concerned that the launch of the rewards program took place\u00a0without a &#8220;prior and diligent&#8221; risk assessment, particularly regarding the <strong>addictive effect caused by the rewards and the adverse\u00a0effects on physical and mental health,<\/strong> especially of minors. According to the DSA legislation, large online platforms must\u00a0conduct risk assessment exercises and submit a report to the European Commission services before launching any new functionality that may have a critical impact on systemic risks, a provision that TikTok did not comply\u00a0with in this case.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese platform&#8217;s commitments on the program that allows users to earn points by performing specific activities have been made binding.
