All EU passengers rights in case of delays, cancellations, and more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211;\u00a0 During the summer travel season, delays and cancellations of\u00a0planes, trains, ships, and buses used on vacation\u00a0are around the corner. That&#8217;s why <strong>it is important to know all the passenger rights that EU legislation<\/strong> <strong>guarantees<\/strong>, when and how to complain, and the possible consequences. It&#8217;s not just a matter of delays and cancellations but also other (unfortunate) circumstances, from overbooking to lost luggage to a train or sea accident. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GUTSQ9iW0AAxXvy-e1723024073393.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-382633 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GUTSQ9iW0AAxXvy-e1723024073393-300x259.png\" alt=\"App Diritti Passeggeri Ue\" width=\"400\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GUTSQ9iW0AAxXvy-e1723024073393-300x259.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GUTSQ9iW0AAxXvy-e1723024073393-768x664.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GUTSQ9iW0AAxXvy-e1723024073393-750x648.png 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GUTSQ9iW0AAxXvy-e1723024073393.png 794w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get a clear picture of EU passenger rights, the European Commission developed\u00a0<strong>the &#8216;Your Passenger Rights&#8217; <\/strong>app (you can\u00a0download it here\u00a0for <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=eu.europa.publications.passengerrights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Android<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/be\/app\/passenger-rights\/id535428814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple iOS<\/a>), with an intuitive interface that highlights &#8212; circumstance by circumstance and for all modes of travel\u00a0 &#8212; when one can apply for a refund, compensation, or ask to reschedule\u00a0travel. Ahead of the revised passenger rights framework and the introduction of <strong>a Regulation to protect travelers using combinations of modes of transportation<\/strong> (e.g., airplane and then train), according to last November&#8217;s\u00a0European Commission proposals.<\/p>\n<h3 id='air'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">Air<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/youreurope\/citizens\/travel\/passenger-rights\/air\/index_en.htm#cancellation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air passenger rights<\/a>\u00a0can be asserted if the flight is within the EU and operated by an EU or non-EU airline if it arrives in the territory of the EU from a non-EU country (and is operated by an EU airline); if the flight departs from an EU country to a non-EU country (and is operated by an EU or non-EU airline); and <strong>if compensation, re-routing, or assistance has not already been received by the airline<\/strong> for the same trip under the laws of a non-EU country.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the 27 EU countries, the overseas territories of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion Island, Mayotte, Saint-Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands (not the Faroe Islands) are also included, as are<strong> flights to and from Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland<\/strong>. As of January 1, 2021, air passenger rights rules <strong>will apply for flights from the UK to EU member countries only if an EU carrier operates the flight<\/strong>, not\u00a0a UK or non-EU carrier.<\/p>\n<h3 id='train'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">Train<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">EU<a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/youreurope\/citizens\/travel\/passenger-rights\/rail\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0train passenger rights<\/a><strong>\u00a0rules apply to all rail services when traveling within the borders of the European Union,<\/strong>\u00a0even if\u00a0member countries may decide on some exceptions for urban, suburban, regional, domestic long-distance trains, those operated exclusively for historical or tourist purposes, and international when most of the trip takes place outside the EU (not possible for cross-border trains within the EU).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The railroad company or ticket vendor must disclose\u00a0information at the ticket purchase<\/strong>, such as lower fares, faster travel times, planned and real-time interruptions\/delays, bicycle capacity, and availability of facilities on board for people with disabilities or reduced mobility. In addition, <strong>during the journey, the train operator must provide real-time information<\/strong>\u00a0about\u00a0on-board services (including Wi-Fi), the next station, interruptions and delays, main connecting services, and passenger rights.<\/p>\n<h3 id='ship'  id=\"boomdevs_3\">Ship<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/youreurope\/citizens\/travel\/passenger-rights\/ship\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ship passenger rights<\/a>\u00a0rules apply to\u00a0ferries and cruise ships by sea or inland waterways if sailing from an EU port or outside the EU (but the service must be operated by an EU transport company). <strong>These do not apply, however, to ships that can carry up to 12 passengers or have no more than three\u00a0crew members;<\/strong> ships that cover a distance of less than 500 meters (one way); historic ships; excursion and sightseeing ships (if they do not have accommodation facilities or if the overnight stay does not exceed two\u00a0nights on board).<\/p>\n<p>EU passenger rights <strong>apply to persons, luggage, and vehicles on board in the event of an accident at sea<\/strong>, if the ship is registered or the contract for the voyage was booked\u00a0in an EU member country, and if it departs and\/or arrives at an EU port.<\/p>\n<h3 id='bus'  id=\"boomdevs_4\">Bus<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">One can exercise<a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/youreurope\/citizens\/travel\/passenger-rights\/bus-and-coach\/index_it.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> bus passenger rights<\/a>\u00a0when the journey begins or ends in a member country, and they\u00a0<strong>apply primarily to regular long-distance services<\/strong> (when passengers are picked up and dropped off at predetermined stopping points according to a set schedule). Long-distance is defined as a<strong> scheduled distance of the service<\/strong> &#8211; not the individual trip &#8211; of<strong>\u00a0at least 250 kilometers<\/strong>. The bus operator must provide clear and correct information about the service and passenger rights throughout the journey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to the &#8216;Your Passenger Rights&#8217; app, it is possible to see under what circumstances one can exercise the rights envisaged by EU legislation, from overbooking a flight to lost luggage to an accident.
