According to a PD note to the EU Parliament, the text submitted by the former Milan City Councilman\u00a0(between 2011 and 2024) and since July 16, a member of the European Parliament asked the EU executive if it is aware of the issue, what measures it intends to take in this regard, and <strong>if it is in contact &#8220;with the Italian and French authorities.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The Frejus tunnel was closed after\u00a0<strong>a landslide in the\u00a0\u00a0Saint-Andr\u00e9\u00a0municipality (Savoy)<\/strong> on August 28, 2023.\u00a0Initially, it caused the interruption of both road and rail traffic between Piedmont and French Savoy. After a few weeks, the A43 highway &#8211; which connects France and Italy -was restored for cars and trucks,\u00a0but\u00a0the tunnel through which the railway, one of the continent&#8217;s most important channels for transporting goods and people, passes was not. Since January of this year,\u00a0<strong>the French high-speed TGV line between Milan and Paris has restarted for passenger transport, but only thanks to a system of replacement buses<\/strong>, which, however, involve longer travel time and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/08\/07\/passenger-rights-app-eu-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">different changes in the means of transportation<\/a> on the line.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Restoration work is continuing with significant\u00a0delays, and <strong>in recent months, reports emerged that the railway was to be reopened by December 2024<\/strong>. However, on July 31, French authorities\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoie.fr\/upload\/docs\/application\/pdf\/2024-08\/cp_chantier_falaise_la_praz-def_31_juillet_2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0that this\u00a0would not happen before the first quarter of next year &#8220;if no new serious geological risks occur.&#8221; Also according to reports from the Savoie department,\u00a0<strong>the work is complicated by the steepness and instability of the cliff<\/strong>, with more than 20 technicians specializing in high-altitude rope work (at over\u00a0200 meters) taking turns seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_382726\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 450px;\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_382726\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-382726\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Imagoeconomica_2244110-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-382726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Imagoeconomica_2244110-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Matteo Salvini\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Imagoeconomica_2244110-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Imagoeconomica_2244110-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Imagoeconomica_2244110-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Imagoeconomica_2244110-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Imagoeconomica_2244110-2048x1363.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Imagoeconomica_2244110-750x499.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Imagoeconomica_2244110-1140x759.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-382726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Transport Minister and deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini (Lega)<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-382726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was not enough for MEPs, not only the PD. &#8220;Considering the long-planned closure of the Mont Blanc tunnel for maintenance work,<strong>\u00a0there is a high risk of a blockade to cross-border trade,<\/strong>&#8221; the Lega&#8217;s delegation to the EU Parliament warned, submitting another parliamentary question to the Commission &#8220;to ask to intensify the dialogue with the French authorities to determine a timeline by which the section (of the Frejust tunnel) will be reopened&#8221; and to &#8220;<strong>suggest financial support for operators who have had to suspend activities.&#8221;<\/strong> Even if Lega MEPs speak of an &#8220;immediate interest on the part of the Italian authorities&#8221; -which &#8220;must necessarily be followed by a response from the EU&#8221; &#8211; the PD&#8217;s Maran points the finger at the Lega secretary and deputy prime minister in the Meloni government <strong>Matteo Salvini<\/strong>: &#8220;<strong>The inertia of the government, and in particular of the Minister of Transport<\/strong>, who seems unable to find a solution for Italian haulers, is very surprising.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Newly elected Pierfrancesco Maran and Lega MEPs are calling for action to prevent further delay after the closure of the rail link between Italy and France in August 2023.
