{"id":387258,"date":"2024-09-05T11:10:55","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T09:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/09\/05\/eurozon-ifo-2024-crescita-zero-germania\/"},"modified":"2024-09-10T19:55:10","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T17:55:10","slug":"eurozone-ifo-warning-zero-growth-in-germany-in-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/05\/eurozone-ifo-warning-zero-growth-in-germany-in-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurozone, Ifo warning: &#8220;Zero growth in Germany in 2024&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; Bad news for the eurozone:\u00a0<strong>Germany grinds to a halt.<\/strong> The Ifo, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifo.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Munich Economic Research Institute<\/a><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\">, calls the German growth trend\u00a0into question and warns of the concrete\u00a0possibility of &#8220;<strong>zero growth&#8221;<\/strong> in 2024. Based on the latest data available to the institute, estimates are cut, and gross domestic product growth is expected to be 0 instead of 0.4 per cent. That&#8217;s not all: the Ifo has also lowered its estimate for 2025, setting it at 0.9 per cent instead of the previously expected 1.5 per cent.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&#8220;<strong>The German economy is stuck<\/strong> and languishing while other countries are recovering,&#8221; warns Timo Wollmersh\u00e4user, head of forecasting at Ifo. &#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Too little investment is being made, especially in manufacturing, and productivity has been stagnant for years,&#8221; he adds. But it is a general and more problematic situation. &#8220;<strong>We also have an economic crisis<\/strong>,&#8221; acknowledges <span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\">Wollmersh\u00e4user:<\/span><\/span><\/span> &#8220;The order situation is poor, and gains in purchasing power are not leading to increased consumption but rather to more savings because people are not stable.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Germany is trudging along, and Munich is now expected to see a return to growth not before 2026, a year for which a +1.5 per cent of national GDP is forecast. This is not good news for the eurozone&#8217;s leading economy, whose slowdown could produce knock-on effects for the entire eurozone.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>Stressing Germany would also be the EU&#8217;s sustainable agenda,<\/strong> argues the Ifo forecast chief.
