Brussels –\u00a0While Central and Eastern Europe is battered by torrential rain<\/a>, there are wildfires in Portugal<\/strong>.\u00a0To deal with the flames reaching\u00a0the District of Aveiro<\/strong>, between Porto and Coimbra, Lisbon has asked Brussels to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism<\/strong>. For now, the only confirmed casualty<\/strong> is a rescue team member.<\/p>\n

On Sunday (Sept. 15) several forest fires<\/strong>\u00a0broke out<\/a> in the region of central Portugal overlooking the Atlantic<\/strong>, leading to numerous traffic problems along highways<\/strong> (both northbound towards Porto and southbound towards the capital), forcing the evacuation of residents, especially in the area of Albergaria-a-Velha<\/strong> and Sever do Vouga<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By the next day,\u00a0around 1,600 firefighters<\/strong>\u00a0were at work at some 20 sites, attempting to tame the flames fueled by strong winds.<\/span>\u00a0In the vicinity of Oliveira de Azemeis<\/strong> alone, more than 500 were reportedly engaged. According to local authorities, there were at least four injured<\/strong>, while one firefighter reportedly died<\/strong> from cardiorespiratory arrest. The fire alert<\/strong>\u00a0will be active across the country until Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, stated <\/a>that the EU is “urgently mobilizing eight Canadairs<\/strong> through the Community Civil Protection Mechanism,” as requested by the Portuguese government. Italy, France, Greece, and Spain provided the aircraft that will soon go into action.<\/p>\n
