{"id":390849,"date":"2024-09-18T16:45:29","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T14:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/09\/18\/presentati-i-cinque-film-candidati-al-premio-lux-del-pubblico-grandi-protagonisti-i-temi-sociali-e-politici-attuali\/"},"modified":"2024-09-23T17:48:30","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T15:48:30","slug":"five-films-nominated-for-audience-lux-award-address-key-social-and-political-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/18\/five-films-nominated-for-audience-lux-award-address-key-social-and-political-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Films nominated for Audience Lux Award address key social and political issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; <strong>Five films by European directors<\/strong>, all award-winning,\u00a0<strong>are now in competition for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lux-award.europarl.europa.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public&#8217;s Lux Award<\/a><\/strong>, organized by the European Parliament to bring politics and the public closer together through the medium of film.<\/p>\n<p>During the presentation press conference, MEP\u00a0<strong>Sabine Verheyen<\/strong>, First Vice-President of the European Parliament, described the <strong>Prize<\/strong> as &#8220;<strong>a way to promote<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>the ideas and fundamental principles of the EU<\/strong>.&#8221; Along with her, <strong>Nela Reihl<\/strong>, Chairwoman of the Committee on Culture and Education, added that <strong>cinema<\/strong> is &#8220;a <strong>means of expression that transcends spatial, economic, and social divisions<\/strong>&#8220;, and this allows for &#8220;translating the policies of the EU, which we talk about in the European Parliament, by bringing them closer to our citizens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4 id='the-films-in-contention'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">The films in contention<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">A panel of film experts chose in recent months the films that will compete. The first submitted is a co-production of Greece, Austria, Cyprus, Romania, and Bulgaria, <strong>Animals<\/strong>, directed by Greek<strong> Sofia Exarchou<\/strong>, which deals with the working conditions of the tourism industry in Greece, exposing the degrading pace of the entertainment staff. This is followed by <strong>Dahomey<\/strong>, a documentary by French filmmaker <strong>Mati Diop<\/strong>, co-produced by France, Senegal, and Benin to chronicle the issue of the <strong>return of artworks stolen by French colonial troops<\/strong> to the current Republic of Benin, giving voice to the demands of a new generation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Another selected and <strong>only animated film is Flow<\/strong>, directed by Latvian <strong>Gints Zilbalodis. It<\/strong>\u00a0chronicles <strong>climate change<\/strong> using a cat as its hero-protagonist, forced to flee a hostile environment due to a flood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The fourth nominee is <strong>Intercepted<\/strong>, by Ukrainian-Canadian filmmaker <strong>Oksana Karpovych<\/strong>. The documentary chronicles the <strong>conflict in Ukraine<\/strong> and the ensuing destruction. The use of wiretaps of Russian soldiers talking to their families makes the narrative of the French, Canadian, and Ukrainian co-production even more dramatic.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">The last film singled out is\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Julie Keeps Quiet<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, by Belgian\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Leonardo van Dijl<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, which chronicles gender equality, women&#8217;s rights, and mental health in a Belgian-Swedish production through the story of a young tennis player whose coach is suspended for abuse of office.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id='how-the-winner-is-selected'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">How the winner is selected<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The Prize is <strong>awarded by the European Parliament each year in conjunction with the European Film Academy<\/strong>, in <strong>collaboration with the EU Commission <\/strong>and the <strong>Europa Cinemas network<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">From 2020, the Lux Audience Award is\u00a0<strong>awarded<\/strong> to one of five nominated films\u00a0<strong>through an online vote involving <a href=\"https:\/\/luxaward-rating.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the public<\/a>\u00a0and the members of the European Parliament<\/strong>, with an equal weighting of 50 per cent. The nominated films will be in cinemas across the EU and available in 24 European languages until April 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Also added to the project this year is the <strong>Young Talent Program<\/strong>, which selects one representative per EU member country from among young film professionals under 30 who are involved in filmmaking to promote European values.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The purpose of the former is to <strong>foster dialogue between politics and the public,<\/strong>\u00a0and the <strong>films<\/strong>, whether already known or award-winning, must be <strong>relevant to issues of interest to the European debate<\/strong>. Diversity of tone and genre is welcomed, as is accessibility to a diverse audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>There is a huge focus,<\/strong>\u00a0this year as well,\u00a0<strong>on some of the major current social and political issues<\/strong>, including mental health, poverty, climate change, freedom of expression, gender equality, and LGBTIQ+ rights.<\/span>\u00a0The winning film will be announced in April next year, with a date yet to be determined.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Voting among European citizens and MEPs for the best of the finalists.
