{"id":391232,"date":"2024-09-19T19:13:43","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T17:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/09\/19\/destra-ue-risoluzione-venezuela\/"},"modified":"2024-09-26T14:14:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-26T12:14:45","slug":"eu-parliament-right-wing-majority-attempts-maduro-condemned-by-compact-voting-of-epp-ecr-and-sovereignists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/19\/eu-parliament-right-wing-majority-attempts-maduro-condemned-by-compact-voting-of-epp-ecr-and-sovereignists\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Parliament, right-wing majority attempts: Maduro condemned by compact voting of EPP, ECR, and sovereignists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The <strong>European Parliament<\/strong> today (September 19) approved a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20240913IPR23907\/venezuela-meps-recognise-edmundo-gonzalez-as-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolution<\/a> that recognises the <strong>presidency of<\/strong> <strong>Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez Urrutia in Venezuela<\/strong> as &#8220;<strong>legitimate<\/strong> and <strong>democratically elected<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>strongly condemns<\/strong> and <strong>rejects<\/strong> in toto the\u00a0<strong>electoral fraud<\/strong>.&#8221; However, the news is different: the text, proposed by popular and conservative parties, passed thanks to the compact vote of the right wing of the Strasbourg Chamber\u00a0and despite the abstention of the Liberals and the opposition of the Social Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>At the first plenary session\u2014after the inaugural one in July\u2014the scenario of a right-wing majority &#8220;as needed&#8221; is already opening up. The resolution on Venezuela stems from a joint proposal by the EPP and ECR\u00a0and was\u00a0approved thanks to the unity of the\u00a0<strong>right-wing groups in the Parliament<\/strong>: in addition to the European People&#8217;s Party and the European Conservatives and Reformists, strong support from the Patriots for Europe group and &#8220;Europe of Sovereign Nations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Lega<\/strong>, in a note, reiterated its\u00a0key role played, along with that of &#8220;Patriots for\u00a0Europe,&#8221; in the approval and<strong> the\u00a0 PD, M5S and AVS left<\/strong>,\u00a0who shamefully chose not to stand up for rights, freedom and democracy, <strong>was defeated<\/strong>.&#8221; <strong>MEP<\/strong> <strong>Carlo Fidanza of ECR<\/strong> also <strong>denounced the left<\/strong> for what he called &#8220;<strong>complicit silence<\/strong>.&#8221; He argued that &#8220;every extra day given to Maduro is a favour to those who want to turn all of Latin America into the fifth column of Russia, China, and Iran.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">T<\/span><span style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">hrough<\/span>\u00a0its president,\u00a0<strong>Val\u00e9rie Hayer<\/strong>, <strong>Renew Europe<\/strong> communicated and explained its <strong>decision not to vote today<\/strong>. &#8220;Renew Europe <strong>fully supports the Venezuelan opposition leader but does not intend to enter into political agreements with so-called &#8216;patriots,&#8217;<\/strong>&#8221; Hayer commented, reiterating that &#8220;the rise of extremism poses a direct threat to Europe&#8217;s stability and future, and all political parties must take a stand against it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Socialists and Democrats Group\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>follows the same line<\/strong>, criticising the<strong>\u00a0EPP&#8217;s decision to <\/strong>&#8220;<strong>ally itself with the extreme right in the European Parliament<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<strong>Javi L\u00f3pez<\/strong>, vice-president of the European Parliament and S&amp;D negotiator for the resolution on the situation in Venezuela, again speaking of the EPP,\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>criticised<\/strong><\/span><strong> the decision &#8220;to build an agreement on Venezuela with Meloni, Orb\u00e1n and Le Pen<\/strong>, together with the support of the German far right, instead of pro-European groups.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 id='condemnation-of-maduro-and-restoration-of-democracy-key-points-of-the-resolution'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">Condemnation of Maduro and restoration of democracy. (Photo by Federico PARRA \/ AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many (legitimate) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/29\/maduro-reappointed-president-of-venezuela-amid-international-communitys-doubts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doubts<\/a> from the international community after the re-election of Nicolas Maduro and even more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/08\/06\/chaos-venezuela-election-eu-maduro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concern<\/a> for the regime&#8217;s clampdown on the opposition.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The European Parliament, or at least the &#8220;European right&#8221; today, took a stand,\u00a0<strong>approving the motion with 309 votes in favour, 201 against and 12 abstentions<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0The final resolution has key points: <strong>restoring democracy in Venezuela<\/strong>, <strong>condemning Maduro and human rights violations<\/strong>, and <strong>avoiding<\/strong> other <strong>migration crises<\/strong> in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Parliament&#8217;s first request to Venezuelan electoral authorities is to <strong>publish<\/strong> &#8220;<strong>complete, transparent, and detailed voting results<\/strong>&#8221; respecting the people&#8217;s will. In 2023, the Maduro government and the Venezuelan opposition alliance (Plataforma Unitaria Democr\u00e1tica) signed a partial agreement on promoting political rights and electoral guarantees for all (called the Barbados Agreement), to guarantee &#8220;free and fair&#8221; elections, which Parliament recalls was not respected.\u00a0Further confirmation comes from the <strong>arrest warrant against the president-elect<\/strong> (who fled to Spain in early September), which MEPs strongly <strong>condemned<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>The EU and member states<\/strong> are urged to <strong>commit to allowing the president-elect to take office on January 10, 2025<\/strong>,\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>thereby avoiding<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0the <strong>risk of a migratory exodus<\/strong> to countries in the region, such as &#8220;the one that has led nearly eight\u00a0million Venezuelans to flee the country in recent years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>There was also a strong condemnation of human rights violations<\/strong> against regime opponents and civil society. Consistently, the Parliament demands the <strong>release of prisoners and individuals arbitrarily detained<\/strong>, compensation for them, and the restoration of their full social and political rights. There was great support for international actions dealing with investigations on Venezuelan territory, with a request to the UN Human Rights Council to renew the <em>fact-finding<\/em> mission dealing with Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The Parliament also called for <strong>restoring sanctions against members of the NEC<\/strong>, lifted in May 2024 by the EU &#8220;as a goodwill gesture,&#8221; but this did not yield any results. The demand is that the <strong>sanctions against the regime be &#8220;extended and expanded to apply targeted human rights sanctions&#8221;<\/strong> against (theoretically outgoing) President Maduro and his associates, who are responsible for human rights violations in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The final resolution has key points: restoring democracy in Venezuela, condemning Maduro and human rights violations, and avoiding other migration crises in the region.
