{"id":392260,"date":"2024-09-25T13:33:09","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T11:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/09\/25\/candidati-commissione-ue-curriculum\/"},"modified":"2024-09-30T17:52:23","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T15:52:23","slug":"cv-commissioners-eu-auditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/25\/cv-commissioners-eu-auditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside the CVs submitted by EU commissioners-designate, first step toward European Parliament hearings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brussels &#8211; As anyone who has gone through the endless application process to gain access to some more or less coveted job position, drafting the <\/span><strong><i>curriculum vitae\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is one of the most tedious but, at the same time, the most problematic tasks to complete. Choosing the most suitable template (Europass or non-Europass?), deciding whether or not to include your photo, evaluating what information to include, and how much detail to go into.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless, of course, you have been nominated by your country as a <strong>member of the European Commission &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0in which case, at least judging from the CVs of the commissioners-designate <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.europa.eu\/european-commission\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available online<\/a>, not much effort seems to be required. That is, if you choose to provide\u00a0one at all. As of the late morning of Sept. 25, CVs\u00a0of Romanian candidate <strong>Roxana M\u00eenzatu<\/strong> and Bulgaria&#8217;s <strong>Ekaterina Zaharieva<\/strong>\u00a0were\u00a0missing from the roster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we were saying, if you had been nominated by your government to be part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/17\/von-der-leyen-unveils-new-college-of-commissioners-six-executive-vice-presidents-fitto-for-reforms-and-cohesion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new European executive<\/a>, you would be free to draft your\u00a0&#8220;biographical note&#8221; (yes, some people have called it that, like the Poland&#8217;s <strong>Piotr Serafin<\/strong>). You could compile a cold list of professional titles flanked by dates (as Finland&#8217;s <strong>Henna Virkkunen<\/strong> or Italy&#8217;s Raffaele Fitto, without any particular creative effort), give a few more details (following the example of\u00a0Portugal&#8217;s <strong>Maria Lu\u00eds Albuquerque<\/strong>) or put together a concise account of your life in discursive form, adopting the first (like Ireland&#8217;s <strong>Michael McGrath)\u00a0<\/strong>or third person (like Estonia&#8217;s <strong>Kaja Kallas<\/strong>). What about a picture? Finally, on length, too, you should not feel any constraints: one page is fine\u00a0(like the Netherlands&#8217;s\u00a0Wopke Hoekstra) but if you can also reach five (see <strong>S\u00edkela<\/strong> and <strong>McGrath<\/strong>).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id='the-steps-of-the-selection-process'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">The steps of the selection process<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, don&#8217;t stress\u00a0it:\u00a0the more important your job is, the less you will have to worry about something as trivial\u00a0as a CV: if your experience already speaks for itself, why bother summarizing it in a document? However, should you ever\u00a0find yourself appointed\u00a0commissioner-candidate,\u00a0 remember that your country&#8217;s nomination\u00a0is just the first step. Once\u00a0the EU Council, in agreement with the head of the incoming\u00a0EU executive, finalizes the\u00a0<strong>list of appointed members of the future\u00a0College<\/strong>, you will have to submit your <strong>declaration of financial interests<\/strong> to the <strong>Justice (JURI)\u00a0<\/strong>committee of the European Parliament, which will conduct a careful <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screening\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to check for <strong>conflicts of interest<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you pass this stage, you will face\u00a0<strong>parliamentary hearings<\/strong>: you will\u00a0appear before the <\/span><strong>releva<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>nt committee<\/strong> based on the portfolio you are supposed to manage. After setting out your program,\u00a0MEPs\u00a0will begin questioning you to see if you are suitable to become a commissioner and, more importantly, capable of fulfilling the duties. A word of caution: don&#8217;t think this is just a formality! The list of appointed commissioners who stumbled at this hurdle\u00a0is long, and you certainly do not want to be the next name\u00a0on the list. Should this occur, your adventure is\u00a0over, and your government will\u00a0replace you with someone else who will go through the same rigmarole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, at the end of the confirmatory hearings, Members have no <strong>additional questions<\/strong>\u00a0(written or oral), the committee chairs and representatives of the political groups will prepare your <strong>review letters<\/strong>, which the <strong>Conference of Committee Chairs<\/strong>\u00a0will consider first, and the <strong>Conference of Presidents second<\/strong>\u00a0(the latter body brings together the chairs of the political groups and the chair of the House). Further clarifications may be requested at this stage, after which the hearings process closes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it&#8217;s still not over: the newly appointed College, with all commissioner candidates approved by MEPs,\u00a0must still face a <\/span><strong>confirmation vote<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a plenary session of the European Parliament\u00a0in Strasbourg. Only after the positive outcome of that vote (a kind of confidence motion) can the new Commission become officially operational. If you have made it this far, congratulations! You are now a full-fledged member of the Community Executive, and you can claim your seat at the Berlaymont building\u00a0for the next five years. We only hope that, whatever CV\u00a0format you send, you will serve the collective interest of the Union (and not only of your country).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Glancing through the CVs provided by commissioners candidates for the next five-year term, one can&#8217;t help but notice the superficiality with which many were compiled.
