Brussels – On artificial intelligence<\/strong> (AI),\u00a0the European Commission gets into<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0the game early<\/strong>: the Brussels-proposed AI\u00a0Pact has gathered over a hundred signatures. The\u00a0signatories<\/strong> have pledged\u00a0right away<\/strong> to implement and enforce\u00a0the requirements of the AI Act<\/a><\/strong>, Europe’s first legal framework on artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

Implementing the\u00a0AI\u00a0Act measures, which on average will be applicable after two years, will require a challenging transition. The Commission has invited companies to express interest since November 2023 to support future changes. The result is voluntary industry commitment<\/strong> to anticipate the Artificial Intelligence Act<\/strong> and begin implementing its requirements before the legal deadline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The pact\u00a0on Artificial Intelligence<\/strong> has two fundamental pillars: collaboration<\/strong> and compliance<\/strong>. For the former, the goal is\u00a0to\u00a0disseminate<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>companies’\u00a0<\/strong>know-how<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, with the acquisition of best practices from other participants in this preparatory phase. Another proposal is\u00a0to provide an\u00a0online platform<\/strong>\u00a0covering the AI implementation process<\/span>\u00a0to foster exchange among companies.<\/p>\n

The second pillar aims to outline a framework for implementing the standards.<\/strong> The assumption is that companies proactively disseminate implemented practices<\/strong> with other companies to facilitate alignment toward transparency goals<\/strong> and high-risk requirements, particularly for developers and resellers of artificial intelligence systems. Concrete commitments are mentioned, with ongoing or planned actions and associated timetables.<\/p>\n

The goal is to\u00a0build a solid foundation<\/strong>\u00a0based on trust in AI technologies.<\/span>\u00a0Companies are asked to commit to creating a governance strategy, mapping “high-risk” systems, and disseminating AI\u00a0knowledge among staff.\u00a0In addition to these key objectives, over half of the signatories have committed to additional commitments, including ensuring human oversight, mitigating risks, and transparently labelling certain types of AI-generated content.<\/p>\n

Among the<\/strong> participants<\/strong>, some giants<\/strong>, such as Meta, Apple, or Mistral, are missing<\/strong>. This does not bode well for the effectiveness of European standards.<\/p>\n

From the Berlaymont, there is a firm answer: participation in the pact\u00a0is voluntary<\/strong> and important for planning work that will have to be done in the future anyway. Signatories number more than a hundred<\/a>, with\u00a0Google <\/strong>and Microsoft<\/strong> among them (which, in the list of big companies, have their importance) but also some of the leading developers of artificial intelligence, such as OpenAI<\/strong> (creator of the well-known ChatGpt<\/a>). “Artificial intelligence offers many benefits to all of us, but it also carries risks,” commented today<\/a> Thomas Regnier<\/strong>, Commission spokesman, “we encourage all companies to join this initiative<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

In any case, companies will have to comply with the EU framework rules on artificial intelligence when they become effective. For those who have moved ahead by participating in the pact, the road may be smoother.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
