However, it also honors his contribution to <strong>freedom of thought. <\/strong>That\u00a0is probably why <strong>Patriots for Europe<\/strong> and <strong>Europe of Sovereign Nations<\/strong> felt (for the second time) that the US entrepreneur was the ideal candidate. According to the two political groups, the former Twitter, after its takeover, would have benefited from Musk&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>efforts against <em>cancel culture and who<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0pledged to fight censorship through &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/the-political-scene\/what-the-twitter-files-reveal-about-free-speech-and-social-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter Files<\/a>.&#8221; Another commitment is to expand Internet access in remote areas, &#8220;promoting digital inclusion and equality in access to information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For his commitment to ensuring democracy in <strong>Venezuela, the<\/strong> <strong>ECR<\/strong> and the\u00a0<strong>EPP<\/strong>\u00a0nominated\u00a0<strong>Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez Urrutia<\/strong>, a president legitimately elected by the people but a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/08\/06\/chaos-venezuela-election-eu-maduro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">victim<\/a> of &#8220;judicial intimidation&#8221;<\/strong> by the Maduro regime. The two political groups, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/19\/eu-parliament-right-wing-majority-attempts-maduro-condemned-by-compact-voting-of-epp-ecr-and-sovereignists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed<\/a> on defending the opposition in Venezuela in the European Parliament, also shared the choice of Uturria&#8217;s candidacy, to which the <strong>EPP also added Mar\u00eda Corina Machado<\/strong> as the leader of democratic forces in Venezuela, another victim of opposition repression.<\/p>\n<p>Another victim of the crackdown on dissent was Azerbaijani <strong>academic and anti-corruption activist Gubad Ibadoghlu<\/strong>, who the <strong>Greens\/ALE<\/strong> chose\u00a0as a candidate. He\u00a0was arrested in 2023 after criticizing the country&#8217;s oil and gas industry. He was <strong>subjected to human rights violations<\/strong>, reflecting the Azerbaijani government&#8217;s treatment of those who criticize its regime (especially\u00a0regarding fossil fuel management).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Left<\/strong> rewarded the tireless work of Palestinian <strong>journalists in the Gaza Strip<\/strong>. Over\u00a0100 correspondents have been killed on the ground to carry out reports since October 7, 2023; many have been assaulted or arrested. Despite the poor conditions, journalists continue to document the conflict and report on Gaza, often &#8220;<strong>without international protection or supervision<\/strong>.&#8221; The nominees are\u00a0<strong>Hamza Al-Dahdouh, Wael Al-Dahdouh, Plestia Alaqad, Shireen Abu Akleh, and Ain Media in honor of Yasser Murtaja and Roshdi Sarraj<\/strong> to represent the entire category of Palestinian journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Also linked to the conflict in Gaza is the <strong>candidacy by Renew Europe and the Socialists<\/strong> of two <strong>feminist associations<\/strong>, the <strong>Israeli <strong>&#8220;Women Wage Peace&#8221;<\/strong> <\/strong>and the Palestinian<strong> <strong>&#8220;Women for Sun&#8221;<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0that work together for a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with the participation of women, youth, and children. The S&amp;D, in its nomination, specified, considering their collaboration, Yael Admi and Reem Hajajreh, the leaders of the two movements (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensvoicesnow.org\/nobel-peace-prize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobel Peace Prize nominees<\/a>\u00a0because of their commitment\u00a0to the cause).<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, <strong><span class=\"erpl_product-name\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Jina Mahsa Amini and the Iranian &#8220;Woman, Life and Freedom&#8221; movement received the award. This year, it will have to wait until October. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>On Oct. 17, after the Foreign Affairs and Development committees vote, a shortlist of three candidates will be announced.
