{"id":396422,"date":"2024-10-09T17:56:42","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T15:56:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/10\/09\/parlamento-ue-interferenze-russia-moldova\/"},"modified":"2024-10-14T19:20:43","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T17:20:43","slug":"european-parliament-points-finger-at-putin-stop-interference-in-moldova","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/09\/european-parliament-points-finger-at-putin-stop-interference-in-moldova\/","title":{"rendered":"European Parliament points finger at Putin: &#8220;Stop interference in Moldova&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Brussels &#8211; <strong>Russia<\/strong> must immediately cease its <strong>operations of interference<\/strong> in the democratic life of <strong>Moldova<\/strong> ahead of Election Day next October 20, when citizens of the former Soviet republic will go to the polls to choose the <strong>new head of state<\/strong> and express their preference about the country&#8217;s <strong>accession to the European Union<\/strong>. This was put on paper by the <strong>European Parliament<\/strong>, which continues to support Chisinau&#8217;s path away from Moscow and toward the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>resolution<\/strong> was approved Wednesday (Oct. 9) by the plenary meeting in Strasbourg by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/PV-10-2024-10-09-RCV_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a very large majority<\/a>: 508 votes in favour, 53 against and 104 abstentions, which included the Lega and the Italian delegations of the left (the M5s and the two elected members of Avs who sit in <em>The Left<\/em>). In the adopted text, MEPs strongly condemned the <strong>destabilizing activities<\/strong> that Moscow is carrying out in the Balkan country, in whose democratic process the Kremlin is interfering through <strong>a cyber war<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In two weeks, on <strong>October 20<\/strong>, Moldovans will have to vote in two important elections: the <strong>election of the new president of the Republic<\/strong> and the <strong>referendum on Chisinau&#8217;s membership in the European club<\/strong>.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">In this context, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/it\/press-room\/20241003IPR24421\/parliament-condemns-russia-s-interference-in-moldova\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Parliament denounces<\/a><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/it\/press-room\/20241003IPR24421\/parliament-condemns-russia-s-interference-in-moldova\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0that<\/a>\u00a0the Russian Federation allegedly\u00a0<strong>financed with some \u20ac100 million<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>hybrid operations of various kinds<\/strong>\u00a0to influence<\/span><span style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0voter behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The East European country&#8217;s authorities recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2024\/10\/03\/moldova-uncovers-unprecedented-pro-russia-vote-rigging-a86567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brought to light<\/a> a <strong>large-scale election fraud<\/strong> that was supposed to bribe <strong>100,000 Moldovan citizens<\/strong> by rewarding them with <strong>$15 million<\/strong> (about \u20ac13.7 million) through oligarch <strong>Ilan Shor<\/strong>. And precisely against several individuals who, like Shor, would work to undermine the country&#8217;s sovereignty, the MPs are pressing the Council to <strong>adopt new sanctions<\/strong>\u00a0while calling for the extradition to Chisinau of &#8220;wanted Moldovan <strong>fugitives<\/strong>&#8221; like Shor and <strong>Vladimir Plahotniuc<\/strong> (who are currently in Russia and Turkey, respectively).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to <strong>respect Moldova&#8217;s independence<\/strong>, the EU Parliament reiterated for the umpteenth time its call for <strong>withdrawing Federation troops<\/strong> from the self-proclaimed separatist republic of <strong>Transnistria<\/strong>, a <i>de facto <\/i>independent strip of land on the border with Ukraine and in which <strong>large quantities of arms and ammunition<\/strong> are amassed (e.g., in the <strong>Cobasna<\/strong> depot).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Concerning the former Soviet state&#8217;s path to the EU, the Strasbourg Chamber urged the Commission to include Chisinau in the <strong>Pre-Accession Assistance Instrument<\/strong> (IPA), with which <strong>the EU executive supports candidate countries<\/strong> in reforms to meet the so-called convergence criteria. Moldova applied to join the European club in March 2022 and was granted <strong>candidate status<\/strong> in June of that year.
