{"id":396998,"date":"2024-10-11T12:58:29","date_gmt":"2024-10-11T10:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/10\/11\/alta-velocita-settore-ferroviario-ue\/"},"modified":"2024-10-16T19:47:53","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T17:47:53","slug":"railway-companies-praise-von-der-leyens-high-speed-rail-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/11\/railway-companies-praise-von-der-leyens-high-speed-rail-plans\/","title":{"rendered":"Railway companies praise von der Leyen&#8217;s high-speed rail plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211;\u00a0The ambitious E<strong>uropean high-speed rail network, which European Commission President <\/strong>von der Leyen <strong>wants to help connect European capitals,<\/strong> <strong>pleases the passenger rail industry.<\/strong> The goal is to improve connectivity by linking it with priorities of decarbonizing and strengthening European competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>We wholeheartedly support President von der Leyen\u2019s r<\/strong>ecent call for an ambitious European high-speed rail network as a vital step towards advancing sustainable transport,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cer.be\/cer-press-releases\/european-rail-sector-applauds-president-von-der-leyens-vision-for-high-speed-rail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> <strong>Alberto Mazzola<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>executive director<\/strong> of the <strong>Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER)<\/strong>. It will also become essential to integrate the <b><strong>open sales and distribution model (<a href=\"https:\/\/cer.be\/cer-eu-projects-initiatives\/open-sales-and-distribution-model-osdm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSDM<\/a>)<\/strong> into the present regulatory framework, the\u00a0CER<\/b>&#8216;s executive director added.<\/p>\n<p>OSDM is nothing more than a European adapter to link national sales systems. In practice, it facilitates the purchase of international tickets across the EU and allows combining different modes of transport into a single purchase (and with cheaper fares). <strong>Mazzola says ongoing investments should be protected<\/strong> &#8220;to secure\u00a0OSDM implementation by 2025, thereby enhancing ticketing processes across Europe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fran\u00e7ois Davenne, director general of the International Union of Railways (UIC<\/strong>), agrees. At the annual meeting held in Vilnius,\u00a0hosted by the Lithuanian Railways (LTG), thanks in part to speeches by the <strong>Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Transport and Communications, Loreta Maskalioviene<\/strong>, it was possible t<strong>o analyze the situation of European transport<\/strong> and to assess\u00a0the future potential for the expansion of rail transport in Europe. The crucial words are <strong>collaboration and functionality<\/strong>, with eyes on <strong>2030 <\/strong>as the target date for <strong>completing<\/strong> the remaining <strong>sections of the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/transport.ec.europa.eu\/transport-themes\/infrastructure-and-investment\/trans-european-transport-network-ten-t_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Trans-European Transport Network<\/strong><\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As <strong>Davenne<\/strong>\u00a0said, the green transition and sustainability thank us. &#8220;<strong>Rail<\/strong> accounts for 7-8% of global freight and passenger transport, but <strong>emits only 1-2% of total transport emissions,<\/strong> positioning it as a key and ready player in making mobility and tourism more sustainable.&#8221; According to the <strong>UIC director, there is a lack of\u00a0investment<\/strong>, which is critical to achieving the climate goals set by the EU.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, CER and UIC pledged\u00a0<strong>to work closely with infrastructure managers and rail operators<\/strong>. Promoting stronger partnerships and stringent standards imposed by\u00a0European regulations can ensure greater efficiency and integration at the EU level. The rail sector also wants to contribute to the 2050 climate neutrality target, opening up to collaboration with all involved stakeholders to make a substantial impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The goals established at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/20\/more-efficient-green-transport-and-high-speed-investment-ambitions-of-european-ministers-meeting-in-budapest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">informal meeting<\/a> of European transport ministers <\/strong>held on September 19-20 in Budapest are back and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/clean-and-sustainable-mobility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are part of the EU&#8217;s Strategy<\/a> <\/strong>for Clean and Sustainable Mobility. Among the objectives is<strong> doubling traffic on the high-speed network by 2030 and tripling it by 2050, <\/strong>which requires large-scale projects to commit to<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>One of these is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railbaltica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rail Baltica<\/a>,\u00a0aiming to integrate the Baltic countries with the European rail network.<\/p>\n<p>This commitment from industry leaders can only please von der Leyen. In the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/document\/download\/de676935-f28c-41c1-bbd2-e54646c82941_en?filename=Mission%20letter%20-%20TZITZIKOSTAS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mission letter<\/a><\/strong> of the <strong>commissioner-designate for sustainable transport and tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas,<\/strong> the Commission president identified <strong>these projects as crucial objectives of Tzitzikostas&#8217;s mandate<\/strong>, and the support of the associations will facilitate the European work.<\/p>\n<p>The two associations<strong> asked\u00a0the Commission &#8220;to\u00a0facilitate and support <\/strong>appropriately, through a<strong> suitable regulatory framework, the smooth implementation of existing solutions.&#8221;<\/strong> The ball has effectively been passed to President von der Leyen.
