Brussels – In the first nine months of this year, irregular border crossings fell\u00a042 percent\u00a0to<\/strong> 166,000, according to\u00a0Frontex<\/a><\/strong>, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.<\/p>\n

Three percent less than the August preliminary data<\/a>, which refers to the number of detections of irregular crossing at the external borders of the European Union (taking into account that the same person may cross the border several times in different locations at the external border).<\/p>\n

By route, the <\/strong>“most active to the EU” was the\u00a0Central Mediterranean,<\/strong>\u00a0with the\u00a0decrease<\/strong> stable at minus 64 percent<\/strong>\u00a0and 47,700 arrivals. The other Mediterranean<\/strong> route continues to grow, with the\u00a0Eastern<\/strong> route registering an\u00a0increase of 15 percent<\/strong> and the largest number of detections for September.<\/p>\n

Crossings in the Western Balkans<\/strong> fell<\/strong> further (down 79 percent, two points more\u00a0than in August), registering “the highest drop of all major migration routes to the EU.”<\/p>\n

In contrast, crossings in the western Africa<\/strong> route<\/strong><\/strong> show no signs of decreasing, with the number doubling<\/strong> “compared to the same period<\/strong> (January-September, n.ed.<\/em>) last year<\/strong>.” The same goes for the\u00a0eastern land borders<\/strong>, with a 192 percent<\/strong> increase, but registering a slight decrease from preliminary August data.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Channel Route recorded 47,514<\/strong> crossings, an increase of 2 percent<\/strong>, significantly less than the 13 percent increase recorded in August and the 22 percent increase in July.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
