Italy leads the way in recycling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The EU recovers 61.4 per cent of waste. Even in 2022,\u00a0<strong>Italy led the way\u00a0with the highest recycling rate<\/strong> among EU countries.<\/p>\n<p>The Statistical Office of the European Union has <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20241017-1?etrans=it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determined<\/a> that, in 2022, approximately 1,992 million tons of waste were processed.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">While the amount of waste has increased by 5 per cent since 2004,\u00a0<strong>recovered<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>waste has increased from 870 to 1,223 million tons<\/strong>, a growth of nearly 41 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Recovery\u00a0<\/strong>includes <strong>recycling<\/strong>, <strong>backfilling<\/strong>, and <strong>incineration with energy recovery<\/strong>. While recycling consists of &#8220;any recovery operation by which waste materials are reprocessed into products, materials, or substances, whether for original or other purposes,&#8221; filling is an operation whereby &#8220;suitable wastes are used for reclamation purposes in excavated areas or for engineering purposes in the landscape.&#8221;\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>At the Union level, recycling goes the most<\/strong>\u00a0(40.8 per cent), followed by backfilling (14.2 per cent) and energy recovery (6.4 per cent).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The amount of waste subject to\u00a0<strong>disposal only<\/strong>\u00a0from 2004\u20132022 has\u00a0<strong>decreased by 25.1 per cent<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0In 2022, the majority remained in landfills.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the Green Deal&#8217;s goal of climate neutrality by 2050, it became necessary <strong>to also act on the circular economy<\/strong>, as announced in the related <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/HTML\/?uri=CELEX:52020DC0098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Action Plan<\/a>. In November 2022, the Commission proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_7155?fbclid=IwAR17DTjpv2Z22Wf8tQ73xYvoQ7yjuvXVeT8kZhrYDEri9eMkrz4XJrS-eAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new EU-wide rules on packaging<\/a> and introduced the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/30\/eu-directive-right-repair-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">right of reparation<\/a> directive,&#8221; pushing the idea that fewer discarded products mean less waste and pollution. In parallel, a transition to using <strong>biodegradable and compostable materials<\/strong> is taking place.<\/p>\n<p>European countries behave in different ways regarding waste management, also shown by the latest Eurostat results.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The differences in results are very clear among European countries:\u00a0<strong>Italy is\u00a0the best\u00a0in recycling<\/strong>\u00a0with 85.6 per cent, followed by Belgium and Slovakia.<\/span>\u00a0Slovenia leads the way\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">in recycling via backfilling, while\u00a0<strong>Romania, Bulgaria, Finland, Ireland,<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0and Sweden<\/strong> lag behind. Between 2018 and 2020, the latter\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">was the ground for the &#8220;<\/span><a style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/03\/swedens-queen-of-waste-never-recycled-tons-of-waste-buried-everywhere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biggest environmental crime in Sweden in terms of scope and organization<\/a><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">&#8220;.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the period between 2004 and 2022, waste recovered in the EU increased by 41 per cent.
