Brussels – The EU recovers 61.4 per cent of waste. Even in 2022,\u00a0Italy led the way\u00a0with the highest recycling rate<\/strong> among EU countries.<\/p>\n

The Statistical Office of the European Union has determined<\/a> that, in 2022, approximately 1,992 million tons of waste were processed.\u00a0While the amount of waste has increased by 5 per cent since 2004,\u00a0recovered<\/strong>\u00a0waste has increased from 870 to 1,223 million tons<\/strong>, a growth of nearly 41 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recovery\u00a0<\/strong>includes recycling<\/strong>, backfilling<\/strong>, and incineration with energy recovery<\/strong>. While recycling consists of “any recovery operation by which waste materials are reprocessed into products, materials, or substances, whether for original or other purposes,” filling is an operation whereby “suitable wastes are used for reclamation purposes in excavated areas or for engineering purposes in the landscape.”\u00a0At the Union level, recycling goes the most<\/strong>\u00a0(40.8 per cent), followed by backfilling (14.2 per cent) and energy recovery (6.4 per cent).<\/span><\/p>\n

The amount of waste subject to\u00a0disposal only<\/strong>\u00a0from 2004\u20132022 has\u00a0decreased by 25.1 per cent<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0In 2022, the majority remained in landfills.<\/p>\n

Considering the Green Deal’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050, it became necessary to also act on the circular economy<\/strong>, as announced in the related Action Plan<\/a>. In November 2022, the Commission proposed new EU-wide rules on packaging<\/a> and introduced the “right of reparation<\/a> directive,” pushing the idea that fewer discarded products mean less waste and pollution. In parallel, a transition to using biodegradable and compostable materials<\/strong> is taking place.<\/p>\n

European countries behave in different ways regarding waste management, also shown by the latest Eurostat results.\u00a0The differences in results are very clear among European countries:\u00a0Italy is\u00a0the best\u00a0in recycling<\/strong>\u00a0with 85.6 per cent, followed by Belgium and Slovakia.<\/span>\u00a0Slovenia leads the way\u00a0in recycling via backfilling, while\u00a0Romania, Bulgaria, Finland, Ireland,<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and Sweden<\/strong> lag behind. Between 2018 and 2020, the latter\u00a0was the ground for the “<\/span>biggest environmental crime in Sweden in terms of scope and organization<\/a>“.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
