In a web of international alliances and contrasts, the axis that has now been welded between Pyongyang and Moscow is also leading to a strengthening of ties between Brussels and Seoul, already important trading and soon-to-be<\/span>&nbsp;military partners. The straw that is breaking the camel&#8217;s back is the now-confirmed presence of <strong>North Korean soldiers alongside Russian troops<\/strong> against the Kyiv army.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">The chairwoman of the EU executive,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">, heard South Korean head of State&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">Yoon Sul Yeol<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;on the phone on Monday (Oct. 28) to discuss progress on the&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">security and defence partnership<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;between the EU and the Republic of Korea announced in May 2023 and close to launch.<\/span>&nbsp;The agreement, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/read_24_5565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reads<\/a> the European Commission&#8217;s website, &#8220;underscores the <strong>interconnected security nature of Europe and East Asia<\/strong>&#8221; and aims to strengthen &#8220;the joint commitment of the EU and the Republic of Korea to promote peace and stability in both regions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Metaphor aside, it means that Brussels and Seoul want to join efforts to deal with <strong>a political-military alliance<\/strong> that is worrying the entire West, inside and outside NATO: that between the <strong>Russian Federation<\/strong> and <strong>North Korea<\/strong>. For months now, international media and intelligence agencies halfway around the world have been highlighting how the dictatorship led by <strong>Kim Jong-un<\/strong> has been aiding the autocracy of <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong> in its <strong>war of aggression against&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>Ukraine<\/strong><\/span>.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">First by&nbsp;<strong>supplying war materials<\/strong>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/10\/north-korean-ballistic-missiles-used-by-russia-in-ukraine-worry-brussels-and-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">especially ballistic<\/a>) and, recently,&nbsp;<\/span>by <strong>sending soldiers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The first reports that <strong>military personnel<\/strong> from the Democratic People&#8217;s Republic of Korea (DPRK) had <strong>joined Russian soil<\/strong> to be trained by Moscow&#8217;s army had come from Kyiv, which, around October 23,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/25\/eu-russia-north-korean-troops-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had reported<\/a> the presence of North Korean <strong>soldiers in Kursk oblast<\/strong>, the Federation territory where the Ukrainians penetrated in August in a surprise raid. Then&nbsp; Washington and Brussels also confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Today, Chairwoman von der Leyen denounced the provision of &#8220;more and more lethal assistance to Russia&#8221; by the DPRK, culminating in the fact that &#8220;for the first time <strong>North Korea&#8217;s soldiers are deployed in support of Russia&#8217;s war of aggression<\/strong>,&#8221; which &#8220;represents a <strong>significant escalation of the war against Ukraine<\/strong> and threatens global peace.&#8221;&nbsp;<span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">On the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia, the deputy director of the South Korean spy agency,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">Hong Jang-won<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">, updated EU and NATO diplomats in Brussels: Seoul&#8217;s services estimate that&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">the quota of 10 thousand combat-ready troops<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;will have been reached by December.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The EU chief executive assured the South Korean president that the European response to such developments &#8220;will focus on <strong>cooperation with the Republic of Korea and other partners<\/strong>&#8221; in the region, such as <strong>Japan<\/strong> &#8211; with whom, too, Brussels is in the process of launching a security and defence partnership. After all, von der Leyen noted that the intensification of military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang risks pushing the&nbsp;DPRK to &#8220;<strong>further increase tensions on the Korean peninsula<\/strong>&#8221; by threatening Seoul more closely. The situation in the area is already tense after, in mid-October, some <strong>road links between the two Koreas<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/oct\/15\/north-korea-blows-up-roads-to-south\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were literally<\/a> <strong>blown up<\/strong> by the North Korean military.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intensifying military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, with the former supporting the latter&#8217;s war effort in Ukraine, is increasingly worrying the West.
