After the shutdown of Volkwagen plants in Germany, Audi Brussels to close"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; It is a <strong>hot week for the German automotive industry<\/strong>. Following Volkswagen&#8217;s announcements in Germany, <strong>Audi in Brussels has also decided that it will shut down on February 28, 2025<\/strong>. Until the actual shutdown, workers will not be laid off. Yet, it is another blow to the German automotive industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Audi is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audi.com\/en\/company\/strategy\/locations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volkswagen Group<\/a> and the decision was made yesterday (Oct. 29)<\/strong>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lecho.be\/entreprises\/auto\/la-solution-pour-audi-brussels-pourrait-se-trouver-dans-une-autre-marque-du-groupe-volkswagen\/10529302.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L&#8217;Echo<\/a> reports, after an extraordinary works council. It fits into the downward spiral plaguing the German automotive sector, which just this week already saw the parent company announce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/29\/volkswagen-shuts-down-at-least-three-plants-in-germany-chancellor-scholz-also-faces-intense-criticism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closure of at least three factories<\/a> in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lecho.be\/entreprises\/auto\/la-solution-pour-audi-brussels-pourrait-se-trouver-dans-une-autre-marque-du-groupe-volkswagen\/10529302.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February 2024<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong>management of the Belgian plant<\/strong> <strong>confirmed<\/strong> that the <strong>new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nl.audi.be\/be\/web\/nl\/modellen\/q8-e-tron\/q8-e-tron.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Audi Q8 e-tron<\/a><\/strong> ( the new electric car model)\u00a0<strong>would no longer be produced in Brussels<\/strong>, three years earlier than the announcement regarding\u00a0relocating production to Mexico, to reduce costs and be closer to the US market.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to what one might believe, <strong>the announcement of closure at the end of next February surprised<\/strong>\u00a0workers. <strong>The risk had become evident<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lecho.be\/entreprises\/auto\/restructuration-chez-audi-brussels-plus-de-1-400-emplois-menaces-des-cette-annee\/10554879.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0since July of this year<\/a><\/strong>, when the Volkswagen Group announced that it wanted to renovate its Audi Brussels site, initiating the so-called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lacsc.be\/vos-droits\/travailler-dans-le-secteur-prive\/licenciement-et-d%C3%A9mission\/licenciement-collectif?t=1730285829571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Renault Procedure<\/a>, <\/strong>which\u00a0in Belgian law means <strong>preparing for collective redundancies<\/strong>, which would have involved nearly half of the 3,000 employees in the Belgian subsidiary.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_401318\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 376px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36EH4V2-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-401318\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36EH4V2-1024x657.jpg\" width=\"376\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36EH4V2-1024x657.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36EH4V2-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36EH4V2-768x493.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36EH4V2-1536x986.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36EH4V2-2048x1314.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36EH4V2-750x481.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36EH4V2-1140x732.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 376px) 100vw, 376px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-401318\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Protests outside the Brussels headquarters of Audi in Forest. In the end, <strong>the heaviest price is for the workers.<\/strong> Regarding the conditions of the layoffs, confidential negotiations are underway, regarding a &#8220;possible social plan,&#8221; as <strong>Peter D&#8217;hoore, Head of External Communication at Audi Brussels,<\/strong> defined\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The last hope was <strong>to find a buyer to prevent a shutdown<\/strong>. So far, Audi Brussels has struggled to attract investors, although management has suggested there could be updates to assess at the upcoming work council meeting. The only (vague) statement on the subject comes from D&#8217;hoore: &#8220;<strong>The working group on alternative business models<\/strong> is continuing at\u00a0the same time (as the site closure procedures, ed.),&#8221; but for now, there are no further details regarding changes in the situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>Volkswagen wants to cut the dead weight of electric vehicle production. <\/strong>It is slashing German and Belgian production, which are not as profitable as they should be. For Brussels, the site&#8217;s issues are also &#8220;long-standing structural&#8221; problems, making it difficult to change the production configuration.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ac_paragraph paywalled-content\">\n<p>&#8220;<strong>This calculation cannot work in the long run,<\/strong>&#8221; said <strong>Thomas Schaeffer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand<\/strong> on Monday. The German giant is making some challenging decisions, which testify to the\u00a0<strong>great crisis the automotive market in Germany is experiencing.<\/strong> This sector, however, has considerable significance for German production as a whole, making a significant contribution to building the country&#8217;s export position, which has entered into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/25\/german-exports-in-free-fall-alarm-from-the-ifo-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a phase of sharp contraction this year<\/a>, however.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ac_paragraph paywalled-content\">Interestingly, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/en\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20241030-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurostat data<\/a> regarding the trade of electric or hybrid cars is positive <\/strong>in 2017-2023, showing an increase of 24 percentage points for car exports, not enough to offset a crisis<strong> spreading like wildfire in other European countries.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"o-articlebody-left\">\n<div class=\"c-articlecontents\">\n<div class=\"ac_paragraph paywalled-content\">\n<div class=\"ac_paragraph paywalled-content\">\n<div class=\"ac_paragraph paywalled-content\">\n<div class=\"ac_paragraph paywalled-content\">\n<p>In <strong>Italy<\/strong>, meanwhile, there are <strong>tensions between government and business over cuts to the sector<\/strong>. &#8220;The government has cut <strong>4.6 billion from the Automotive Fund<\/strong>, earmarked for the adoption of measures to support the reconversion of the supply chain,&#8221; writes <strong>ANFIA<\/strong> (the Association of companies in the automotive supply chain). The <strong>Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso<\/strong> tried to calm the tension, saying\u00a0that &#8220;<strong>all resources will go to\u00a0the productive investments<\/strong>\u00a0with particular attention to components, which is the real strength of Made in Italy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Urso&#8217;s position fails to convince, especially at a time of transition when everyone involved in the manufacturing supply chain, from workers to entrepreneurs, needs a balance between Italy&#8217;s commitment in the EU to the green transition and support for its businesses. We are talking about a manufacturing sector that employs over 270,000 direct employees and a turnover of more than 100 billion euros. &#8220;<strong>It is the only sector that is required to make a compulsory historical\u00a0transformation in a few years<\/strong>,&#8221;\u00a0Anfia added, an element that is clearly causing problems not only for Italy, but for all European auto industries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Volkswagen Group&#8217;s associate company at its Brussels headquarters was also hit due to low production and sales of electric cars, combined with increasingly slumping exports.
