In 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahk-italien.it\/it\/news\/detail\/linterscambio-italia-germania-registra-il-secondo-valore-piu-alto-di-sempre-il-rallentamento-tedesco-ha-effetti-minimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the second-highest trade\u00a0value ever<\/a> was recorded, confirming\u00a0Germany&#8217;s top\u00a0position in trade with Italy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, the crisis in Germany&#8217;s automotive sector is not slowing<\/strong>, with Volkswagen\u00a0cutting non-profitable divisions in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/29\/volkswagen-shuts-down-at-least-three-plants-in-germany-chancellor-scholz-also-faces-intense-criticism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/30\/storm-hits-the-german-automotive-sector-after-the-shutdown-of-volkwagen-plants-in-germany-audi-brussels-to-close\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belgium<\/a>, decreasing production and exports, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/29\/eu-duties-on-chinese-electric-cars-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU tariffs\u00a0on China<\/a> to avoid being crushed by sales of electric cars from Beijing. In this context,\u00a0<strong>Italy risks suffering a significant\u00a0shock wave if the automotive sector in Germany enters a downward spiral<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2023<\/strong>, according to data from the Italian-German Chamber of Commerce (AHK Italien),<strong>\u00a0trade in the auto sector grew<\/strong>, with increases in\u00a0imports and\u00a0exports. &#8220;The data demonstrate the structural nature of German-Italian relations despite the context of the German slowdown,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahk-italien.it\/it\/news\/detail\/linterscambio-italia-germania-registra-il-secondo-valore-piu-alto-di-sempre-il-rallentamento-tedesco-ha-effetti-minimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the <strong>Chairwoman of AHK Italien, Monica Poggio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The automotive supply chain accounted for\u00a025.76 billion euros, of which Italy&#8217;s share of component exports to Germany was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anfia.it\/it\/comunicazione\/notizie-e-comunicati\/comunicati-stampa\/altri-comunicati\/lexport-della-componentistica-automotive-italiana-chiude-il-2023-a-7-per-un-valore-di-25-3-miliardi-di-euro-e-un-saldo-positivo-della-bilancia-commerciale-di-5-7-miliardi#:~:text=L&#039;export%20italiano%20di%20autoveicoli,%2C7%20miliardi%20nel%202022).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20.5 percent<\/a><\/strong>, according to data from Anfia (National Association of Automotive Industry Supply Chain), with an economic value of 5.2 billion euros. For\u00a0imports, Germany still ranks first as Italy&#8217;s partner (23.6 percent of the total).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>The crisis in demand for motor vehicles in Europe and Italy, rising production costs, and slowing investment in new mobility technologies are setting the stage for a possible worsening of the scenario<\/strong>,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.to.camcom.it\/sites\/default\/files\/allegati\/cs%20componentistica%202024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warns <strong>Marco Stella<\/strong><\/a>, President of Anfia Components Group.\u00a0&#8220;In the first half of 2024,\u00a0an additional 32,000 job cuts were\u00a0announced, exceeding the 29,000 in the second half of 2020. The components industry is also under pressure in Italy,&#8221; Stella said, speaking about jobs. He also noted the perplexity of supply chain operators about the cuts to the Automotive Fund that the\u00a0Italian government plans.<\/p>\n<p>2024 looks to be a setback year for various economic indicators, starting with turnover, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.to.camcom.it\/osservatorio-sulla-componentistica-automotive-italiana-e-sui-servizi-la-mobilita-2024-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Observatory <span class=\"field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">on Italian Automotive Components and Mobility Services 2024<\/span><\/a>. It is clear that in the EU, like\u00a0in Italy, we\u00a0must consider\u00a0policy goals, such as climate neutrality. Italy has prioritized\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/24\/automotive-italy-back-to-the-drawing-board-review-of-combustion-engine-stop-should-be-brought-forward-to-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discussions on stopping combustion engines by 2035<\/a>\u00a0to bring\u00a0to the EU Council, although reactions have not been\u00a0particularly welcoming.<\/p>\n<p>The market is evolving, and so are\u00a0the rules of production.\u00a0Even <strong>in Italy, there is a shift toward producing components for\u00a0electric and<\/strong>\u00a0automated guided vehicles.\u00a0<strong>As in Germany,<\/strong> the problem is that <strong>the market is not ready to absorb\u00a0the new products.<\/strong> Volkswagen&#8217;s choices may mark a challenging point from which to restart, especially considering the <strong>prospect\u00a0of relocating production to non-EU countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Losing market share for vehicle and component exports would be a substantial blow for Italy<\/strong>. The study by ICE (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.it\/it\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-files\/Rapporto%20ICE%202023-24_Digitale%20pdf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICE Report &#8211; Italy in the International Economy 2023-2024<\/a>) also confirms the tough outlook for the sector: &#8220;Weak prospects are also emerging for transport-related sectors, starting with automotive, characterized by a physiological settling on the high levels reached after the strong growth of the 2022-23 biennium.&#8221; Great attention to the epochal change for the sector with decarbonization and to the difficulties of the debate in the EU, which, <strong>for ICE, will make &#8220;more uncertain the timing and manner in which the green transformation will materialize in the transportation world<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prometeiamio.prometeia.net\/int\/chi-siamo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prometeia<\/a>\u00a0notes that we are &#8220;still far\u00a0from the 2035 target.&#8221; It is clear that there is a lack of incentive policies, which is why\u00a0Germany is not investing in the electric car sector, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prometeia.com\/it\/trending-topics-article\/lindustria-automotive-europea-una-crisi-che-viene-da-lontano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">there is<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;a reversal of the trend, with a <strong>reduction in the share of electric cars sold in\u00a0total<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italy is far behind the European average for electric vehicles, and without the German pull, risks having even less rosy prospects<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0future years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The two historic trading partners risk being engulfed in the same downward spiral.
